PRC WOMAN SHAMED FOR SEATING IN RESERVED MRT SEAT CRIES INNOCENCE

$

This picture of a woman engrossed with watching shows on her handphone while occupying a reserved seat on the MRT has gone viral on cyberspace.

https://www.facebook.com/704447019681962/posts/722083861251611

Netizens roundly criticised her for offering her seat to the elderly lady standing beside her or to the little girl sitting on the floor beside her.

The lady in the photo by the name of Pingping Li has emerged claiming there was another side to the story. In her Facebook explanation, Pingping Li said that the elderly woman and the young girl boarded the MRT after her. A woman seated nearby offered the elderly woman her seat but the old lady refused the offer. She claimed that she too offered the old lady her seat but was reject because the elderly lady claimed that they were alighting soon.

Similarly, the young girl also refused her offer for the seat. This is why she ended up seated comfortably on the reserved seat seemingly oblivious to the elderly lady and young girl.

This is one of the many incidents of self-righteous netizens snapping photos of inconsiderate commuters and publically shaming them online.

Maybe it is time for Singaporeans to take a step back and not be too quick to judge.

CAN YOU TRUST A FRIEND WHO BORROW MONEY BUT REFUSE TO PAY BACK ON DUE DATE?

$
0
0

Suppose you have a friend who borrowed money from you and promised to return to you in full at a specific date.

But as the day draws nearer, he keeps coming up with various excuses not to pay you back, even accusing that you will blow it all away on women, gambling and all sort of ill habits. He claims that it is for your own good that he is not paying you back. After much protests, he delays payment by another 10 years, and even then, he is only going to pay back by installments. There is no guarantee that when the payment date comes, he will not delay again.

And now, he set up a new company and force your whole family to buy his insurance. The premiums will be deducted from the money he owes you. Opting out is not an option, as he will just deduct whether you like it or not. Furthermore, he alone will get to decide on how much the premiums are and you have no say.

Eventually, the premiums are going to wipe out whatever amount he owes you. That is when things get interesting. Now instead of him owing you money, you owe him. And with that, you have to pay him cash for the premiums he demands. If you fail to pay, he will file an injunction to prevent you from leaving the country, even if it is just for a short trip to relax in nearby JB, till you somehow manage to cough up money to pay him. On top of that, he will demand that you pay as high as 17% interests on whatever he says you owe him. If you keep refusing to make payment into his scam, he will have you thrown in jail.

But despite all that, he tells you that you should trust him as he has your best interests at heart and good intention in everything he did (and is doing) to you.

The question is, if you have a friend like that, would you still trust him?

If yes, then there is nothing more to say. Happy paying.

If no, then why would you even trust any political party that behaves like that, much less vote for them?

HOW S'POREANS CAN STOP THE PAP FROM RAISING GST

$
0
0

PAP has got property stamp duties, COEs, $100 casino entry for Singaporeans, ERPs, current 7% GST, income tax and all these are not enough?

3% may not sound a lot but say for a family who spends 5k per month, 10% of GST per month will be $500 and 1 year will be $6000.

Hiring all these scholars, paying them huge salaries and yet can't solve our low/middle income people. So I will recommend WP to win all seats and SDP to win too... This will make PAP shiat bricks and make them think harder

As a property agent myself I have seen how much consumers have to pay to the govt on the stamp duties alone. And it is freak scary. For example a foreigner bought a condo for 1mill, the stamp duty alone can be up to $180K.

And govt still complain no money and need more taxes to help the poor?! And if you happen to remember the recent top agent who transacted the penthouse unit which earned her millions of commission, but who earns more in the transaction? The govt or her? The stamp duty that the buyer is paying or the 1-2% commission that she is earning?

So where do these money goes to? Please think carefully before u vote

GENERAL NG CHEE MENG SHOULD JOIN THE OPPOSITION TO REALLY HELP S'POREANS

$

0

Dear Editors,

It seems the cat is out of the bag now that Lieutenant General (LG) Ng Chee Meng is retiring from the SAF after 29 illustrious years of service as Chief of Defence Force (CDF). It is almost certain that LG Ng would be contending for a seat in parliament with the incumbents for the upcoming election.

What is less certain is whether this is a good move for LG Ng. If he does join the PAP as expected, he would be highest ranking SAF flag officer to do so, trouncing even MG Kee Chiu Chan, BG Tan Chuan Jin, and the Prime Minister, who himself was the youngest BG in Singapore history, ever. Mind you, generals do not make the best CEOs or ministers, but what Singapore has is the Confucius model of promoting the best scholars to top government posts. Invariably the brightest students at 18 years of age pick the SAF Overseas Scholarship when given the choice, and many of these are simultaneously awarded the even more prestigious President's Scholarship. Thus the ones with the most potential end up in the military, which explains the logic of the PAP when pursuing the most outstanding candidates with strong leadership and brains.

Back to my topic. In my mind, LG Ng should distance from his PAP masters. He, and other bright young men, need to find a platform that improves the lives of the common Singaporeans. Definitely not with the PAP, with so many screw ups over the last half dozen years. Issues such as 6.9M, CPF, Roy, Amos, NS white horsemen, MRT breakdowns, etc. eat at the heart of commoners. Issues that our million dollar ministers cannot connect with.

LG Ng needs to join WP or SDP. The tides are reversing against the PAP big time. Only a fool cannot see that. PM Kim Hsien Loong and his yes-man ministers are just too busy boosting the GDP so they can collect their multi-million dollar bonuses. All too simply by opening the floodgates. Now millions of PRC, Indian nationals and Pinoy populate every square inch of this tiny island, so much so that it becomes unbearably congested and unliveable.

It is time for President's Scholars and SAF Scholars to join opposition parties. With the Internet, our military leaders need not fear what Kim Hsien Loong might do. He has done lots of damage to himself with the handling of Roy and Amos. LG Ng, and other senior military men, please stick up for regular Singaporeans. We expect no less from you, given your oath to serve and protect... Singaporeans, not the PAP elites.

S'POREAN VEHICLES MUST REGISTER & PAY RM20 TO ENTER MALAYSIA FROM 1 SEP

$

Singaporeans entering Malaysia via their own private vehicles must register with the Malaysian Road Transport Department (RTD) or they will not be allowed to enter the neighboring country. The rules take effect from 1st September this year and will be applied to all private cars, buses, taxis, goods vehicles as well as diplomatic cars, according to The Star.

Singaporeans can go online to register on 15th August, and vehicle owners are required to pay RM10 (S$3.60) for road tax, which is valid for five years.

"Singaporeans can register their vehicles at all the 72 counters in both the Causeway and Second Link as well as R&R areas near the two main entry points. However, we encourage online registration through the RTD website," Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz told the press at the Sultan Abu Bakar customs, immigration and quarantine building in Gelang Patah on Saturday.

"RTD will then issue a radio frequency identification (RFID) card after a RM10 registration fee is paid. The registration is valid for five years. The tag will need to be renewed upon expiry, or when the owner buys a new car," he added.

Singapore vehicles who register before 1st September will be allowed through Johor Checkpoint for 1 month free of charge (1st to 30th September), after which they will be charged RM20 per entry for the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP).

Government vehicles, motorcycles, public buses and taxis would be exempted from the VEP but they still have to be registered with the RTD.

PAP RAMS THROUGH ISEAS-YUSOF ISHAK BILL DESPITE WP'S OBJECTION TO CLAUSE 6

$
0
0

Two weeks ago (14 Jul), it was reported that a fierce fight erupted between PAP and WP over the introduction of a seemingly innocent bill to amend the name of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) to the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute (‘Fierce fight erupts between PAP and WP MPs over bill‘).

The Bill was passed at around 5pm after close to 1 hour of heated debate, despite strong objections from WP to Clause 6 on a provision to give the minister (i.e. Education Minister) and not the President and other organisations, the power to appoint ISEAS Board members.

ISEAS was originally established as an autonomous think tank in 1968 by an Act of Parliament with the aim to be a leading research centre and think tank dedicated to the study of sociopolitical, security, and economic trends and developments in Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic and economic environment.

To maintain its independence as a think tank, the Act stipulates that the President and other donor organisations would have the power to appoint ISEAS’ board members, overseeing it.

Contention

On the surface, the bill proposed to change the name of ISEAS to the “ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute”, which the WP MPs fully supported yesterday.

But a Clause 6 was quietly introduced as part of the bill, which “streamlines” the composition of the ISEAS Board from 22 to 15 members, and “updates” appointment authority for the Board. Under this clause, only the Minister (i.e, the government) will be able to appoint board members. The President and other donor organisations to ISEAS will no longer be able to do so.

Also, to protect ISEAS personnel, Clause 11 contains new sections to protect relevant ISEAS personnel from harassment and personal liability in the performance of their duties.

The PAP government probably decided to change the appointment authority because it can’t be sure if it will always have a “PAP-endorsed” individual like Tony Tan as President of Singapore.

Both PAP and WP MPs fought intensely over Clause 6.

ISEAS (Amendment) Bill more than a simple name change

WP Chairman Sylvia Lim started the protest when she pointed out that the ISEAS (Amendment) Bill was more than a simple name change. It also sought to change the structure of its board in a “very fundamental way”, affecting its diversity and autonomy.

“Can ISEAS maintain its autonomy and independence with all the powers concentrated in the minister with this bill? More worryingly, is the concentration of powers to appoint the board in the minister a sign of things to come? Are there plans to turn ISEAS into a body that simply churns out knowledge for the government bureaucracy?” she asked.

Her speech drew a rebuke from Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Hawazi Daipi, “I feel this is not the right time, while we’re giving the highest honour to an eminent Singaporean, to politicise the issue by questioning whether Iseas will become a body that will follow the instructions of the Government.”

“I feel quite hurt to hear Ms Sylvia Lim’s comments,” he said.

Second Minister for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli also later posted on his Facebook page that he, too, felt hurt as Ms Lim had “tarnished” the occasion with her questions.

Heng accuses Sylvia Lim of paranoia

Mr Heng, kept focusing his arguments on honoring the late former President Yusof. The bill’s main aim is to honour Mr Yusof, he stressed. Other clauses are to update provisions in legislation, he said.

“Now I hope that Ms Lim does not see shadows when there are none, and I hope that Ms Lim is not throwing up a red herring,” Mr Heng accused Ms Lim of paranoia.

WP Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang also joined the fray. He said that while they support the name change to honour Encik Yusof, “we cannot square with the change(s) that are being ‘tompang’ (piggybacked) with the name change”.

He questioned if the Government was indeed “sincere” in honouring Mr Yusof, or if it was “a disguise for controlling ISEAS”.

WP MPs were quite clear that they supported the other provisions except for Clause 6.

DPM Teo tries to disallow WP objecting to only 1 clause

Eventually, Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, intervened and said, “We’re going around in circles.” She put an end to the heated debate.

When it came to vote, the WP MPs made clear that they supported renaming ISEAS to the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. However, they would not support the bill unless Clause 6 was removed.

Then DPM Teo tried to force WP to either accept the whole bill or reject it entirely. By rejecting it entirely, WP would naturally run the risk of being accused of anti-the late President Yusof, playing into the hands of PAP.

Fortunately, Parliamentary rules do allow MPs to disagree with specific clauses of the Bill.

Speaker Halimah Yacob told DPM Teo, “The Standing Order allows for Members to record specific disagreement with specific clauses of the Bill. It does. So, it will be recorded that they have an objection to clause 6, and that will be recorded in the proceedings.”

Following was what transpired when DPM Teo tried to “corner” WP [Link]:

(Hansard)

Mdm Speaker : Well, Members, I think this clarification session has gone on long enough. And we are going around in circles. I will now put the question.

Question put, and agreed to.

Ms Sylvia Lim : Madam, the Workers’ Party would like its objection put on record.

Mdm Speaker : Yes, I take note of your objection and it would be placed on record.

Ms Sylvia Lim : Due to clause 6.

Mdm Speaker : I will take note of that, your objection to clause 6. I assume all Members of the Workers’ Party want their objection to be recorded? Yes, it will be recorded. Can the Clerk now please read the title of the Bill.

The House immediately resolved itself into a Committee on the Bill. – [Mr Heng Swee Keat].

Bill considered in Committee; reported without amendment.

Ms Sylvia Lim : Madam, the Workers’ Party would like its objection to the Bill due to clause 6 recorded.

Mdm Speaker : I take note of your objection. It will be recorded. Clerk, please proceed.

The Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Teo Chee Hean) : A point of Order, Madam. Is there such a thing as an objection on that basis, and to have this kind of objection recorded in a vote? Either you vote for or you vote against the Bill. Which Standing Order, Madam, may I ask?

Mdm Speaker : The Standing Order allows for Members to record specific disagreement with specific clauses of the Bill. It does. So, it will be recorded that they have an objection to clause 6, and that will be recorded in the proceedings. Clerk, can you please proceed to read the title of the Bill?

Bill read a Third time and passed.

So, when a vote was called, WP of course, lost in the PAP-dominated Parliament.

Do you think a 1-party dominated Parliament is healthy for Singapore?

Tell us what you think.

Response to Multi- cornered fight at SMC Potong Pasir,

Some people has perceived and taken issue that I, as a woman, older and supposedly with lesser academic qualifications should not contest in a multi cornered fight with better qualified candidates. This is wrong perception.

I will never feel unequal to any challenges.

I have been walking the ground for the past 4 years since becoming an NCMP, been an active parliamentarian and helping Mr Chiam in Potong Pasir when he was an MP for 27 years.

I have already sunk my roots and bonded with Potong Pasir residents long before any candidates.

Potong Pasir was and is still is "My kind Of Town"

I will never FORSAKE Potong Pasir to stand as a candidate in another constituency.

On 7th July, SBS Transit Bus No. 34 driven by a PRC made a Rapid Sharp Turn; abruptly jammed on his Brakes causing my Wheelchair Mum and Indo Maid to fall all at the same time...It was a Fatal Fall that left her in the worst conditions; had acute internal head bleeding; bruises and skin from fore-arms and arms came off....it was a very very bloodied scene....Indo maid had bruises and fractured her little finger..

My Mum passed away two days later.

SBS Transit is disclaiming liabilities!! I am now taking legal action against them..

This is definitely the FIRST WHEELCHAIR accident on a SBS Transit that results in a Fatal Death of our Pioneer Generation in the worst condition!! We need to put a STOP to all this and not let our Pioneer Generation passed away in this worst condition!!! They do not need to suffer all this PAIN at their Age!!

Patrick Yeo, I saw your Wheelchair Mum was also involved in a Bus Accident.

PLEASE come forward and lets jointly seek Justice for our Old Folks!

WILL FORMER NSP STAR NICOLE SEAH RETURN FOR A SECOND RUN?

28 year-old Nicole Seah, who was part of the 5 man National Solidarity Party (NSP) team who won 43.4% of the Marine Parade GRC vote in 2011, has been contacted by the party via WhatsApp. The NSP hopes that Nicole Seah, whose eloquence, good looks and charisma won over many Singaporeans in 2011 will return for a second run with the party this coming elections.

Nicole Seah left the NSP in 2013 and moved to Bangkok for work.

According to NSP acting secretary-general Hazel Poa, the party had "initiated contact" with Ms Seah via WhatsApp, but has yet to hear from her. She hopes that Ms Seah would rejoin the party, although she stopped short of saying whether the party wants to field her as a candidate in the next election.

During the elections in 2011, Nicole Seah created an air of excitement in an otherwise sterile and serious campaign. She was widely compared favorably to the People's Action Party's Ms Tin Pei Ling due to their comparable ages.

Now in 2016, NSP is fielding yet another political superstar, Kevryn Lim - a Fashion Studies Masters holder who looks set to rock the political scene as much as her predecessor.

Stay tuned for updates on whether the NSP will field 2 political superstars this coming election.

BMW DRIVER DRIVES OFF AFTER INJURING FELLOW DRIVER & PASSENGER AFTER ARGUMENT

This evening, 02/08/2015, 1230am, the driver of this matte blue BMW punched me in the face and drove off, leaving my nose with a gash and blood clots inside. I now have slight difficulties in breathing. He also left my passenger with a gaping wound.

This driver stopped his car at the exit gantry of Balmoral Plaza, not allowing the vehicle I was driving to exit. I high beamed him, but to no avail. I then sounded my horn twice to alert him of my presence, yet he didn't respond. Subsequently, I left my vehicle and walked towards the driver's side of the BMW to ask him to move. He didn't. He hurled explisitives at me and asked why I couldn't wait. Apparently he was having an argument with the passenger in his car. I once again raisedy voice to ask him to move. Once again, he cursed at me and came out of the vehicle and challenged me to a fight. He lunged forward and punched my nose. My passenger who came out wanting to stop him got hit too, suffering from a 1cm gash near the nape of his neck. During the struggle, I kicked his car door, leaving a huge dent on it. He then entered his car spat at me and drove off with the lady.

To the 1.78cm tall driver with short dyed hair and bad complextion, I'll make sure karma gets you. May you get busted for all your I'll gotten gains. To your parents: what a champ you brought to this society.

I hope this driver will be found, named and removed from the roads

PAP MINISTER: ALJUNIED GRC DESERVES CANDIDATES WHO HAVE INTEGRITY & HEART

$

0

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said today that the PAP is looking for candidates with financial and legal backgrounds to run in Aljunied GRC. But more importantly candidates need to have "integrity and the interests of residents at heart”.

Teo said: “We want a team that can look after the town council and make sure its financials are in good order, payments are made and that there are no chronic deficits in the financials...This Government has always maintained a high standard of integrity. Anyone who wants to stand for office or hold office must maintain these standards. And Singaporeans should demand these standards. This is how we ensure the system remains clean."

Aljunied GRC was wrested from the PAP during GE2011 and during the past 4 years, AHPETC has been repeatedly flagged for "major lapses" in governance and complicance by the AGO. Among the issues raised were poor internal controls and inadequateoversight of related party transactions.

The AHPETC court case will be heard in court again on 3 August 2015, after the HDB applied to be co-plaintiff in MND’s case against AHPETC.

LEE HSIEN LOONG: I AM TRYING MY BEST TO HELP SINGAPOREANS

$
0
0

Some four years ago, the inflow of imported labour emerged as one of the hotly debated issues during the 2011 General Election. With the Government having taken decisive steps since even before the elections to curb the numbers of foreign workers, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has reiterated the dilemma facing policymakers in what he described as a “very difficult issue” fraught with trade-offs and long-term implications.

However, as the Government of the day, it is a decision that he and his team cannot avoid, he said.

“If we were not in the government, it is much easier. We can make recommendations, we can write papers, we can make speeches, and we can rouse arguments, unhappiness, point out all the problems we have where we are standing,” Mr Lee said in an interview with Ambassador-At-Large, Professor Chan Heng Chee, which was televised tonight (Aug 2). “But as a government, we have to deal with this issue and it is an issue where honestly speaking, there are no easy choices.”

The topic of foreign workers came up during the interview where Mr Lee spoke on – for the third time in about five weeks – the challenges that the Republic faces over different time horizons: Economy in the next decade, population in 25 years, and national identity in 50 years. Mr Lee had previously talked about these challenges when he delivered a speech on June 30 at the Ho Rih Hwa Leadership in Asia Public Lecture Series, and in an interview with TIME magazine which was published last month.

Adding that there are trade-offs between economic growth and social pressures, Mr Lee said it is the Government’s job to “think of these issues and to make the best decisions which we can, in our judgment, on your behalf and to account to you, and say to the best of my ability this is what I have decided I have to do”.

“And you may agree with it, you may not agree with it, but I can tell you in complete honesty that I am trying my best to do this on your behalf. And I cannot avoid doing this because otherwise I think I will be letting you down.”

Prof Chan noted that “some people say the Government is being populist when you are now curbing population”.

In response, Mr Lee pointed out that the Government has to “watch to see how the foreign workers and immigrants are fitting in with our community, and you have to watch them mix so that you don’t overbalance the numbers or the tone of our society”. He said: “So it is not populist to take cognizance of these real problems and to deal with them and to calibrate the inflow.”

TAMPINES TOWN COUNCIL ALL TALK NO ACTION IN SOLVING HDB FLOODING PROBLEM

Dear Editors,

The corridors and pipes outside my apartment has been constantly flooded when it rains. The water level is at least ankle deep and there is a possibility that the water may seep in to my house.

Have tried contacting Town Council many times, explaining to them the issue. Every time, they claimed that they will look into the issue, but nothing is ever done.

This has been going on for years. Wishing to highlight this incident to hopefully spur on Town Council to do something about it. All talk, no action.

WHY HAVE PRICES OF EVERYDAY ITEMS INCREASED SO MUCH!?

Yesterday I dropped by the medical hall at the mall in the HDB heartland to buy a small bottle of Watermelon Powder as it is, to me, the best remedy for a mouth ulcer. The cheerful elderly lady in the old shop said, "Three dollars."

The price of this commonly used item has escalated more than double over just a few years.

Food and drinks in hawker centre and coffee shops, too have risen significantly.

This impose hardship on especially the ordinary elderly who have little savings and whose children could barely have enough for their own needs to give allowance to their parents.

Many of these elderly are often heard to say, "It is better to die than to be sick. Where is the money to pay for my illness? My children will have nothing left for themselves if they use their CPF to pay for my hospitalisation."

It is a gloomy future for the ordinary old folks here.
