PUB, the national water agency, has put in tremendous effort to ensure that Singapore residents have a sufficient supply of clean drinking water. Residents are also constantly reminded to be prudent in the use of the water.
To this end, one of the actions taken by PUB is to levy high water conservation taxes. This practice is hurting low-income families that have many members living in the same household. On top of this, there is the goods and services tax (GST).
This is double taxation and is unacceptable. PUB should exempt the water consumption tax amount from GST as this is an unnecessary burden for low-income families.
