The People’s Action Party (PAP) officially announced today the slate of candidates for West Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the upcoming General Elections.
The GRC has been downsized from a 5 to a 4-member constituency. Newcomer Mr Patrick Tay , who moves over from Nee Soon GRC, will join Ms Foo Mee Har, Mr S Iswaran and Mr Lim Hng Kiang.
In 2011, the PAP team which contested West Coast GRC at the GE won 66.57 per cent of the vote against a Reform Party (RP) team led by Kenneth Jeyaretnam. RP has already declared that it will once again contest West Coast GRC this year.
The ruling party has said it will announce its entire slate of candidates for the GE before the National Day Rally on Aug 23, in a break from tradition.
The four PAP candidates for West Coast GRC will be:
61 year-old Mr Lim Hng Kiang - Minister for Trade and Industry. Mr Lim previously served as Minister for National Development from 1995 to 1999; Minister for Health from 1999 to 2003 and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office from 2003 to 2004. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) with Tanjong Pagar GRC in 1991, but has represented West Coast GRC since 1997.
53 year-old Mr S Iswaran - Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office. Mr Iswaran is also the Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry. He has been an MP with West Coast since 1997.
49 year-old Ms Foo Mee Har - CEO, Wealth Management Institute. Ms Foo is a member of the Government Parliamentary Committees (GPC) of Finance and Trade and Industry as well as Manpower. She has been an MP with West Coast since 2011.
43 year-old Mr Patrick Tay - Director, Legal Service Department, NTUC. Mr Tay is also an assistant secretary-general at the National Trades Union Congress and a member of the GPCs of Health and Manpower. He has been an MP with Nee Soon since 2011.
MP Arthur Fong will not be contesting the next General Election, while Mr Lawrence Wong, the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, will co-anchor the newly-formed Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC with Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob.
