The National Solidarity Party (NSP) announced today that it will contest MacPherson Single Member Constituency (SMC). This comes shortly after it said that it will pull out to avoid multi-cornered fights. The Workers' Party (WP) had earlier stated that it would contest MacPherson SMC, while the People's Action Party (PAP) will be fielding incumbent MP Tin Pei Ling in the ward.

“In recent weeks, NSP leaders have been receiving feedback and pledges of support from many residents in Marine Parade and MacPherson,” said a party statement today. NSP contested against the PAP in Marine Parade GRC in 2011 and gathered 43% of the popular vote. MacPherson is a ward that was taken out of Marine Parade GRC.

Despite its announcement on 10th August that it would pull out of Marine Parade GRC and MacPherson SMC, the party said that its Central Executive Council (CEC) had “deliberated at length and decided to strike a balance between avoiding unnecessary conflict and keeping faith with our supporters”.

Shortly after the release of the statement, NSP's acting secretary-general Hazel Poa announced that she would be leaving the party.

"The CEC of NSP decided to support Steve Chia’s request to contest in MacPherson SMC in a 3 cornered fight against WP and PAP. It was a decision I strongly disagreed with," she told the media.
