On Monday (17 Aug), the Central Executive Council of NSP decided to support its member Steve Chia’s wish to contest MacPherson SMC, resulting in a 3-cornered fight against WP and PAP. NSP Acting Secretary-General Hazel Poa strongly disagreed with the CEC’s decision (‘Hazel resigns over NSP’s decision to contest MacPherson‘).
However, she was outvoted and hence decided to resign from the party. She announced her resignation from NSP to the press on Wednesday (19 Aug).
“It was a decision I strongly disagreed with, and hence not one I can implement. As the direction that the party has decided to pursue deviates greatly from my own, I see no choice other than to resign from the NSP,” Ms Poa explained to the press.
“As I have mentioned before, in NSP, the leader of the party is the President, not the Secretary-General, unlike in other political parties. The Sec-Gen plays the role of media spokesperson for the party. Therefore, my departure will not result in a situation of the party being leaderless.”
“Whilst I disagree with the decision that has been taken, I respect the right of the CEC as the decision making body of the Party to make that call. I wish NSP all the best in the coming GE,” she added.
“I will therefore not be contesting in the coming GE. I would like to thank all who have encouraged me on my journey and given me helpful pointers, including members of NSP and other political parties, the public and the media. I apologise to all whom I have disappointed. My own disappointment is no less. For me, the coming months will be a time for reflection.”
Netizens’ reactions
Most netizens praised Hazel for being brave and principled. They applauded Hazel’s stand not to enter into 3-cornered fights with WP which would surely split opposition votes:
Shame on NSP:

My highest respects to Hazel Poa… Perhaps Hazel and her husband Tony may want to join WP (if WP will make an exception to take them in as candidates without its usual period of incubation or familiarization) or SFP (if WP will not be making any exception) to contest Tampines GRC. Both Tony and Hazel stand better chances of being elected into Parliament with WP or SFP to serve the people. It is natural for WP to expand to Tampines because it is contiguous to Aljunied and East Coast. SFP has also shown interest in Tampines before ceding it to NSP.

This is outrageous and unbecoming of NSP, instigating a three cornered fight. Some oppo parties can’t get into their bloody head that a coalition against the incumbent is the best bet to unseat the ruthless regime. Their fxxing egos are more important than the plight of the voters. Hope they lose their deposit and are labelled as public enemy no. 1, in the eyes of the citizens in that ward. As for Hazel Poa, wish her all the best and if needed go join a better party.

Hazel Poa has more sense than the whole CEC put together.

Hazel Poa has the highest regards and respect of the people because she refused to go back on her words. A very principled politician who sacrificed herself to stand up for the interests of the 40% who don’t wish to see three-way fights that would benefit no one but the PAP. Hazel Poa can stand tall and proud. The show will go on. NSP will have to pay the price of their stupidity from now on.

NSP is really a party that can NEVER be trusted. It is even worse than SDA and for that matter even Desmond Lim. Hazel Poa even as a lady, she still determines to honour her words and standby what on she has promised and yet the two clown gentlemen (ST and SC) really do not have LP and gone back on their words. They are just simply eunuch and worse than the lady in their party. WTF. Now instead of SDA being the worst party among all the opposition parties, NSP has overtaken SDA to be the most horrible political party in the Singapore History.

I stay in Tampines and plan to vote for Hazel Poa and NSP. Hazel Poa is passionate about helping Singaporeans and have brains.

I applaud the fortitude of Hazel Poa to stand by her conviction. Mrs Tan, your good name is preserved. We have to keep going forward. Do not view this as a setback. It is a long-haul fight. Let these inconsequential characters surface and consign them to … not even history.
NSP Poor Leadership:

Hazel Poa, you did the right thing to resign from NSP. Voters will punish NSP for this in coming GE.

THANK YOU HAZEL POA for putting SINGAPORE FIRST in your political calculus. Voters will remember the right decision and personal sacrifice you have made.

It’s a blessing in disguise. It’ll be a waste of Hazel’s talent if she remains in such a No Substance Party.
Really:

Hazel did the right and honorable act to resign. She is probably the most intelligent of the lot because she knew such action will not hurt WP but backfire on the party not just Macpherson but nationwide. NSP just shot themselves in the foot because who can trust such leadership?

Hazel, you are good. Please carry on the fight by joining another opposition party. NSP is hopeless.

Hazel thank you very much for shining as an upright politician. Yes, you have kept your word. So proud of you.

Yes, Hazel Poa must be commended for her principled stand of not reneging on an agreement and resigning. For that she will walk TALL AND PROUD! I wish her well in her future endeavours.
On the other hand, many netizens were unhappy with Steve Chia’s decision to enter MacPherson SMC, resulting in a 3-cornered fight:

Trust the voters of MacPherson – they are not daft. Steve Chia will get at most 114 votes – this is the number of supporters who wanted NSP to contest in MacPherson.
Steve Chia again!:
August 19, 2015 at 9:46 pm
I thought this guy had disappeared from Sg politics a long time back. Did not know he is with NSP and still refuses to quit politics. Just like the other 2 oppo MPs from the old SDP who were voted into parliament and later voted out, this Steve Chia is harming the good name of oppo politics. Just like Desmond Lim. still helping PAP. How we wish and wish such people to quit politics, but they still hang around… Pwee ! Pwee ! Pwee !

I remember clearly during the election rally in GE2006, Steve Chia told the audience that he would quit politics if he did not win. Well,he was not elected in GE2006, why the f*ck is he still hanging around?
I don’t know what to say!:

Let’s make NSP’s Steve Chia lose his deposit. Give him less than 100 votes.
Nudist Steve:
August 19, 2015 at 11:28 pm
A self-confessed fetish sex maniac wants to an MP. Must be a first in this world. We, voters of MacPherson will make sure he not only loses his deposit, he will lose his underwear too.

Reality Check:

Steve Chia has a character default. Simple as that. No sane party will put him up as a candidate for election. I guess the party could not differentiate between what is a genuine feedback (wanting Steve Chia as a candidate) and what is not. A very silly collective decision. I would go so far as to describe Steve Chia as ‘Damaged Goods’ that just cannot be sold.
ST reports Steve Chia and maid both pictured naked
Indeed, Steve Chia has confessed before that he has a fetish for nude photography.
ST broke the news of nude photos of Steve Chia and his Indonesian maid found in his home on 20 December 2003. Mr Chia’s wife then made a police report after finding the photos.
Both Mr Chia and the maid were said to be smiling in the photos, ST said.
In a follow-up ST report on 21 December 2003 (‘Is it over for Steve Chia?’), ST reported that in a series of SMS messages, Mr Chia told ST that “he and the maid were not in the same pictures, and that the Indonesian maid was not photographed nude”.
“There are no naked photos photos of the maid and my photos are of myself alone, not with the maid. She is not in the picture,” Mr Chia explained in one of the SMS messages to ST.
“But informed sources has said earlier that both were pictured naked,” ST reported.
Subsequently on 22 December 2003, Mr Chia went down personally to SPH to clarify the news (‘Steve Chia Bares All’). He admitted taking “sexy photos” of his maid.
He told ST that the photos of the maid were taken at her request so that she could send them back home to her family. Then, he “pressed the maid to let him take some sexy shots of her”.
“At first, she said no, so I asked her again to give it a try,” he told ST. It took “quite a while” to convince her, but she finally agreed, on condition he deleted the photos immediately after viewing them.
When ST asked him why to took the “sexy” shots, Mr Chia hesitated for a few seconds before saying, “I guess I just wanted to experiment and try new things… This was the first time, the first and only time.”
Later he deleted the computer files but forgot to empty the computer’s trash bin. His wife subsequently found them and made a police report in early December 2003.
He maintained that he never molested the maid or forced her to pose for him. He also explained that he had taken nude photos of himself before while holidaying overseas. He showed these to ST:
When asked about his political career going forward, he told ST at the time, “It’s for the public to decide, after hearing my side of the story, to see whether I am still suitable to represent them.”
Do you think he is still suitable to represent the residents of MacPherson?
Tell us what you think.
