In an announcement today, the Singapore People's Party (SPP) champion Mr Chiam See Tong told reporters today that he would not be contesting the upcoming general election.

In a press conference held jointly with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the SPP-DPP team announced their candidates for Bishan Toa Payoh GRC this morning - but the line-up excluded the 80 year-old veteran Mr Chiam.

He is bowing out due to his age and health, said his wife, Mrs Lina Chiam.

However, Mr Chiam, a member of parliament (MP) for Potong Pasir for 27 years, was present to give his support to the SPP-DPP team. He added that he would remain a political adviser to the party and was far from retiring from politics, citing that he still had "a long way to go".

Mr Chiam said: "As you've seen for yourself we have a strong team here, a very good line-up. They are professionals with good experience."

The SPP-DPP team will include DPP secretary-general Benjamin Pwee, DPP chairman Hamim Aliyas, former marketing manager Law Kim Hwee, training company manager Abdillah Zamzuri, and tech entrepreneur Bryan Long, all of whom will contest under the SPP banner.

Mr Pwee will co-lead the team with Mr Long, who is making his GE debut like his fellow SPP teammates, Mr Abdillah and Mr Law.
