According to a report by The New Paper, Singaporeans and Malaysians have been buying cloned cars from dealers who recycle scrapped vehicles from Singapore and pass them off as cheaper knockoffs.
Several websites and Facebook pages have appeared advertising their services - they claim they can own an 8 - 10 years old BMW, Mercedes Benz or Audi for between RM14,000 (S$4.6K) and RM40,000.
Despite the recent efforts by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the Road Traffic Department, who have seized 153 cloned cars in Terengganu and Kelantan in recent months, some of them appear to be unafraid and have been advertising themselves openly.
Undercover TNP reporters who posed as interested buyers discovered dealers were willing to deal with Singaporeans. At least 2 dealers boasted that Singaporeans working and living in Malaysia have bought cloned cars from them.
