In an interview with the BBC, Indonesia's President Joko Widodo said it would take three years before results can be seen from efforts to end the annual forest fires. He stated it is "not a problem that you can solve quickly".

More than 10,000 personnel and 4 planes have been deployed to put out fires across Kalimantan and Sumatra. Malaysia and Singapore has offered firefighting assistance but Indonesia stopped short of accepting foreign help, insisting that they had enough resources to cope with the fires.

As of now, Indonesia is building water irrigation systems in the forest and canals to transport water to hotspots and enforcement actions are being undertaken by the Indonesian authorities. In a recent ASEAN meeting, Indonesia Chief of Police Badrdin Haiti shared that 210 cases of forest fires were being investigation and 40 companies or individuals are to be taken to court in the near future.
