In a statement by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) today, an Auxilliary Police Officer (APO) fired 2 shots at a vehicle suspected of smuggling cigarettes from Malaysia at Tuas Second Link yesterday night. The incident took place at about 11.45PM.
According to ICA, officers had first observed 4 vehicles stopping near the International Boundary in the direction of Singapore. 2 APOs were sent to check on the vehicles.
However, as the APOs approached, 2 of the vehicles suddenly made a U-turn and drove back in the direction of Malaysia. The remaining 2 vehicles were then asked to proceed to Tuas Checkpoint.
Although both vehicles were headed towards Tuas Checkpoint, one of the vehicles suddenly reversed in a dangerous manner against the flow of traffic. This led to one of the APOs firing 2 shots at the vehicle. The shots failed to stop the vehicle. The car managed to flee towards Malaysia.
ICA says that traffic was light at the time of the incident and there were no injuries.
Interviews with the one remaining driver revealed that the vehicles were involved in a cigarette smuggling operation into Malaysia.
