A nurse from Myanmar was charged in court today for voluntarily causing grievous harm to a patient of the Institute of Mental Health.

In February 2015, 25 year-old Aung Phyo Thu had punched, kicked, and elbowed the patient on his back, head, legs and body multiple times, which caused the latter to sustain two fractured ribs.

Aung is currently out on bail, which has been set at S$20,000 and has his passport impounded. As part of his bail conditions, he is also not allowed contact with the victim.

For his crime, Aung could face up to 10 years in jail, and a fine or caning. His case will be heard on 21 December 2015.

Do you think the standard of patient care in Singapore has dropped since hospitals hired foreigners? Even if there is a shortage of nurses, should hospitals relax their hiring criteria to take in foreigners who abuse local patients and assault them when they are supposed to care and look after them?
