Industry sources familiar with LTA's plans to regulate the private car hire industry revealed that Uber and Grabcar drivers may soon be required to have a vocational license. This licensed can be attained through a 10 hour long training programme. In comparison, taxi drivers face a 60 hour taxi driver vocational license course.
There is an esitmated 10,000 private car hires in Singapore and this new regulation is expected to be announced during Singapore's Budget debate in April. When asked about these regulations, LTA chose to keep mum and said "more details will be made known in the coming weeks."
If this regulatory framework is implemented, Singapore will join a slew of other countries like Australia to regulate an industry that has been accused of competing unfairly with taxis.
Grabcar Singapore Head, Lim Kell Jay believes that the vocational licensing can serve as an added assurance to commuters that Grab drivers and of professional standards.
