A 48 year-old Chinese Singaporean was arrested by the police yesterday. This was in relation to an 3 incidents reported of 3 madrasah girls, aged 14 to 16, who were allegedly assaulted by the man.
The 3 students had been on their way to Madrasah Al-Ma'arif Al-Islamiah in Geylang around 7.20am when the man assaulted them near Paya Lebar MRT station.
The school's discipline mistress Nisha Mohd Hussein posted on Facebook and claimed that the first girl was kicked on the left thigh, while the second was hit with a plastic bag containing a "heavy item" and the third was hit in one of the eyes with the same bag.
By 9.50PM yesterday, the Singapore Police Force revealed that it already had a Chinese suspect in custody.
The attack has left Singaporeans in shock, with many responding with outrage amidst calls for calm by ministers and Muslim religious bodies.
One netizen Josephine Lim wrote on the SPF Facebook, "What a coward. 48 yr old man picking on teen girls? Need to give heavy sentence to let others know such behaviour will not be tolerated."
In a Facebook statement pertaining to the arrests, SPF Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations & Intelligence) concurrent Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Tan Chye Hee said, “The Police take a stern view of acts that could threaten the racial and religious harmony in Singapore. Any person who caused hurt to others on the basis of their race or religion will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.”
