SGT(V) Stijn Welkers joined the Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) in 2008. “I reached a point in my life where I wanted to contribute to society and do something meaningful so I decided to join the VSC,” said the 45-year-old who is currently attached to the Criminal Investigation Department.
SGT(V) Welkers had received a fair share of stares from the public when he first started patrolling the ground during his stint at Toa Payoh Neighbourhood Police Centre. “I would approach them and say hello. However, the reaction by the public had changed over time as people got used to seeing me around in the neighbourhood.”
Carrying out VSC duties on top of work commitments may seem a tad demanding but it is the personal satisfaction of keeping the community safe that keeps SGT(V) Welkers going. One of the most memorable cases that SGT(V) Welkers had encountered was the arrest of a loanshark runner. It was during a plainclothes duty at Toa Payoh Central when SGT(V) Welkers and fellow officers noticed a man behaving strangely near an ATM machine. “He looked wary of his surroundings and behaved in an exaggerated manner,” recalled SGT(V) Welkers. Suspicious, SGT(V) Welkers positioned himself at a place where he was able to keep a close watch on the man. The man was then seen to be taking out multiple bank cards and depositing cash several times. After being questioned, the man admitted to be assisting the loansharks and was subsequently arrested.
VSC officers work hand in hand with regular officers to safeguard the nation. “Besides being able to give back to society, volunteering with the VSC has also allowed me to gain rewarding experiences,” said SGT(V) Welkers with pride and satisfaction.
