Senior Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee said in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 5) that there are now fewer public carparks which have free parking on Sundays, compared to six years ago.

Currently, 55 per cent of Government and Statutory Board car parks offer free parking on Sundays. This compares to about 70 per cent in 2005 and 2010, Mr Lee said in response to a question from Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Leon Perera.

“Certainly, we want to offer free parking on Sunday as much as possible,” Mr Lee said. “(But) in assessing whether to provide free parking, agencies have to balance the specific needs and parking demands of the area.

“For example, it may not be feasible to have free parking on Sundays in HDB car parks where there is high demand for parking from the local residents. This is also the reason why the proportion of car parks with free parking on Sundays has come down over the years."
