In yet another major food scandal to emerge from the PRC, Chinese police have exposed another syndicate for smuggling up to 32.68 tons of expired 2 year-old papayas for use in commercial fruit jams and juices.
Local authorities have fined the company 1.4 million yuan but did not reveal the name of the company.
According to the latest trading records, 25 tons of the expired products were sold to a food processing firm in Suzhou city, Zhejiang’s neighboring Jiangsu Province. They may be used to make fruit juice and jam, said a police representative..
The scandal comes only weeks after police found syndicates smuggling meat that had expired for as long as 30 years.
