Dear A.S.S.,
When it comes to the PAP's latest U-turn on hiring Singaporeans first, I have only 2 questions for the ministers - Why now and Why so late?
Last year, when Singaporeans pushed the government to implement a stricter manpower regime which prioritized Singaporeans first in the workplace, the government hemmed and hawed and said that they could not do it or else companies would run elsewhere.
This link for proof: 'Singaporeans first' policy won't benefit economy in long term (Posted on May 27, 2014 5:43 PM Updated: May 27, 2014 5:45 PM).
Then just recently on July 13, the new Minister for Manpower Lim Swee Say came out and said that he would help "strengthen the Singaporean core in the workplace" by transferring expertise from foreign professionals to Singaporean workers and scrutinize firms who hire too many foreign nationals closely.
Can anyone say hypocrisy? The sudden U-turn is obviously geared at the upcoming elections. And even then how can we be sure the Manpower Ministry will carry through on its promise to halt company's reliance on cheap, addictive foreign labor. I'm sorry if I sound cynical but it's just that the ruling PAP government has broken my trust too many times.
