Speaking at the annual FutureChina Global Forum, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that foreign labour and immigration are sensitive and difficult issues but the Government has to lead and make the best possible decision for the country.
Lee said that while there may be differing views on the matter, he hoped that Singaporeans realise the Government's motivation was always in the best interest of Singapore and Singaporeans.
He said: "Even on the most difficult issue, we need to make the best decision and be accountable to the people...There may be different views on how the policy should be, but I hope people understand that the Government's intent is good. We are doing this for Singapore, and for Singaporeans."
While the Government has moderated the number of immigrants since the huge public outcry of the 2013 Population White Paper, Lee reiterated that "we cannot do without them altogether" due to Singapore's low birth rate.
Lee admitted however that Singaporeans may not want more logical explanation but hoped Singaporeans can see that the Government has its citizen's interest at heart.
