Mr Chiam was member of parliament for Potong Pasir for 27 years until 2011, when he moved out of his constituency and led a team to contest Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in the general elections then. His team garnered 43.07% of the popular vote.

Yesterday, his wife and non-constituency MP Lina Chiam, who also contested in 2011, neither denied nor confirmed his participation, saying that "everything is fluid."
