This special payment is on top of their mid-year bonus this year, which will amount to 0.5 month's pay.

PINOY: FILIPINOS BLINDED BY NATIONAL PRIDE ARE FAILIPINOS!

$
0
0

The problem of Pinoy Pride, better known as Failipino Pride, usually results in the problem of ultra-nationalism.

Being Pinoy is not bad and just because one is a Pinoy does not automatically mean that a person becomes a Failipino or Filifag. A Pinoy can be a decent Filipino or an stupid Failipino, depending on his or her choices.

The problem is when the Failipino becomes the ultranationalist, otherwise known as the "Pinoy Nazi". No decent minded Filipino will try to behave like a Failipino, but will instead embrace a healthy Filipino nationalism. All these ultra-nationalist ideas are no better than the Tokugawa Era of Japan or the Maoist Era of China.

Perhaps the most basic flaw of Failipinos is their bad behavior, which causes outsiders to (unfairly) generalize all Filipinos negatively, like habitual tardiness, rude behavior, littering, peeing anywhere, not finishing one's food, gate crashing, trolling others (Internet or not, secret identity or real identity), offensive humor, derailing any discussion to improve the Filipino image and other similar negative practices that a Filipino can either be rightly or wrongly accused of.

A closer look at Failipino nationalism suggests that they are also arrogant (with a false sense of entitlement) and have ethnocentric feelings which lead them to believe they are the best race on Earth.

I would also talk about the typical attitude of the Failipino nationalist and their arrogance and ethnocentrism. I have observed more often than not, they teach that you must support only Filipino made products and services (no matter how trashy it may be) and to like any foreign services, you are guilty of colonial mentality. Just because somebody likes something that is foreign, it does not make him or her a traitor to the country. Colonial mentality only happens when a person thinks that everything imported is good and everything local is bad. On the other hand, the extreme opposite of colonial mentality is xenophobia or ultranationalism. Nationalism does not mean you must reject anything foreign.

I also may mention how HYPOCRITICAL these ultranationalistic Failipinos are. While they are asking for better support for Filipino made products, services and entertainment, they are also using stuff either born from foreign influence or imported from another country. Some local Filipino delicacy store admitted that their cooking equipment was imported from Japan and their knives and spatulas were from Germany so they can make quality Filipino food.

Returning back to the hypocrisy of the ultranationalistic Failipinos is that they protest against America but later are seen eating at places like KFC, hate anybody who is Chinese (even Filipino-Chinese who are already considered their fellow Filipino) but they avail of services owned by Filipino-Chinese and whenever they insist on Filipino first, they use IMPORTED equipment to do so. At the same time, aren't entertainment gadgets ALSO foreign? They are acting like as if they never used anything imported like don't tell me their TV/PCs and every other appliance are Filipino branded and Filipino made?!

Besides isn't the contemporary Philippines a result of foreign influence? After all, Filipino food has foreign influence like siopao asado, ampao and lumpia are all introduced by the Chinese and later modified by Filipinos to suit their taste. Also, the Philippines did not name itself, it was named by the Spanish colonizers after a foreign king, King Philip I of SPAIN. Besides, without foreign influence, the Philippines would have still been stuck in the stone age today. It's time to stop with the ultranationalist view and embrace a healthy view of nationalism instead for a better Philippines.

Our reader came across an interesting Facebook post on the SPCA Facebook page.

According to one "Aileen Tan", she discovered a PRC shop called Song Hua Jiang Restaurant selling braised dog meat on their menu. The address of the restaurant: Blk 350 Jurong East Ave 1 #01-1233 S(600350).

She asked SPCA whether the sale of dog meat is legal in Singapore. She also posted a link to the menu of the restaurant which allegedly sells the dog meat item in its menu. Another concerned reader has also contributed a photo of the offensive menu item.

The SPCA posted that it has sent its query to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority in Singapore, but there has been no response to Aileen's query since.

Does this mean the sale of dog meat by the PRC restaurant is legal in Singapore?

JAPAN STRIKER PRAISES SINGAPORE'S FOOTBALL PERFORMANCE

In an interview with the media, Japanese striker Keisuke Honda described his disappointment with the result of Japan's match against Singapore, but gracefully heaped praises on the Singapore side.

"The result was what it was, so there’s nothing we can do about it,” said Honda, who hit the crossbar from a free kick midway through the second half. “If anything, I think they took it easy on us."

Japan came up against a brilliant performance by Singapore goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud, who pulled off a string of incredible saves to deny a Samurai Blue a victory.

Despite being ranked 102 places higher than the Singapore team, Japan's lackluster performance earned jeers from its 57K strong home crowd in Saitama Stadium.

On the booing, Honda says that fans were right to boo him and his Japan teammates, and insists he would have had no complaints had they voiced their displeasure louder.

“There were two aspects to the game. One is that we needed someone to make the individual difference and score, but also we weren’t given easy shots and the opposition did very well. I think it was a combination of both. Of course it’s a shock, but we have to get over it. We’ve just started (the qualifying campaign), and this has reminded us how hard the World Cup qualifiers are.”

Despite sombre news about the resignation of the National Solidarity Party's (NSP) secretary Tan Lam Siong, who left to pursue his passion in social and community work, the NSP showed that it remains committed to its constituents and continued to work hard on the ground.

The party knows that it needs to win the hearts of its voters, and so the NSP conducted walkabouts at the markets of GeylangSerai, Eunos and AljuniedBlk 116 coffeeshop and markets on the 14th (Sunday) and 16th (Tuesday) of this month.

Thankfully, the NSP also answered the prayers of many a male netizen who has been dying to see more pictures of the NSP's superstar female candidate, Kevryn Lim, the pretty, capable and obviously hardworking fresh face on the NSP electoral team.

Kevryn was photographed hard at work at all the walkabouts, her charming smile and attentiveness to her constituents unwavering despite the tough job of walking around in sweltering heat, chatting to residents and listening to their stories and feedback.

These pictures taken from the National Solidarity Party's Facebook page show exactly why Kevryn stands out as the queen rose among thorns.

That smile would melt any heart.

A SUDDEN $500 SG50 BONUS FOR ALL CIVIL SERVANTS

$
0
0

The Public Service Division (PSD) released a statement today (17 Jun) announcing a mid-year Annual Variable Component of 0.5 month bonus plus a “special one-off” SG50 payment of $500 for all civil servants.

In addition, Division IV officers will also be receiving a wage increase of $30 in monthly salary, over and above their annual increment in 2015.

PSD explained that the Singapore economy grew by 2.6% on a year-on-year basis in the first quarter of 2015, faster than the 2.1% growth in the preceding quarter.

PSD also observed:

Global economic growth in 2015 is expected to come in marginally better than in 2014
Given the expected improvement in global economic conditions in 2015, externally-oriented sectors are likely to see improved growth prospects although sector-specific factors could weigh on the growth of some sectors
Ministry of Trade and Industry forecasts a GDP growth of 2% to 4% for 2015
On the labour front, unemployment remained low as the labour market remained tight.
Employment contracted in the first quarter of 2015 amid seasonal declines and sharper moderation in employment growth in the manufacturing and construction sectors and segments of the services sector
Against this backdrop, PSD said the Government has decided to pay a mid-year Annual Variable Component (AVC) of 0.5 month bonus.

“The Government also supports the National Wages Council’s (NWC) wage recommendations for low-wage workers. The Government will give a built-in wage increase of $30 in the monthly salaries of all Division IV civil servants. This will be in addition to their annual increment in 2015, and signals the Government’s continued commitment to help raise the salaries of low-wage civil servants,” it added.

It is expected that about 2,500 Division IV civil servants will benefit from this $30 wage increase, PSD said.

Most surprising of all, PSD said the Government will give a special one-off SG50 payment of $500 to all civil servants, “in recognition of their contribution towards nation building”.

The mid-year AVC, special one-off SG50 payment, and built-in wage increase for Division IV civil servants will be paid in July 2015.

“The mid-year payments were decided in close consultation with the public sector unions,” PSD clarified.

“The Government will decide on the year-end AVC payment for civil servants after taking into consideration Singapore’s economic performance in the second half of 2015.”

Altogether, about 82,000 civil servants are set to receive the special one-off bonus of $500. In total, this special SG50 bonus to the civil servants will cost taxpayers $41 million.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) under Minister Chan Chun Sing, said in a statement that it is “heartened” that its call for a special SG50 bonus was accepted.

With regard to the latest move by the Government, The Alternative View (TAV) commented (‘Is your children’s future worth only $500?‘) that the PAP is sparing no expense to “buy votes and win the next GE under the guise of celebrating S’pore’s jubilee year”.

“If S’poreans vote for them again because of this $500, it would be akin to taking the money and slapping themselves because this political model is just not sustainable,” TAV said.

“Is your children’s future worth only $500 which in effect represents a drop in the ocean considering the billions that this Government collects in the form of various taxes from ERP to COEs to Stamp Duties?”

What do you think?

MINDEF CONSIDERING NS DEFERMENT FOR NATIONAL SWIMMER QUAH ZHENG WEN

"High level talks" are underway between the Singapore Swimming Association and the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) over a possible National Service (NS) deferment for one of Singapore's national swimmers, 18 year-old Quah Zheng Wen.

Quah had improved his Olympic "A" time for the 200m butterfly in the recent SEA Games, coming in at 1min 56.79secs. This earns him an automatic qualification for the upcoming Olympics to be held in Brazil.

He also emerged from the SEA Games as the swimmer with the most medals won, winning 12 medals in total from all his events. He bagged 7 golds, 4 silvers and 1 bronze.

This is not the first time that a national athlete has been given permission to defer his NS to train for sporting events. In 2013, another national swimmer Joseph Schooling also had his NS deferred for 2 years so that he could train.

Quah, who is nicknamed "Iron Nose" by his team mates, was also recently accepted into the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore.

WHY "LAZY" CIVIL SERVANTS GET $500 BONUS BUT OTHER HARDWORKING S'POREANS GET NOTHING?

Dear ASS,

The government yesterday announced this sudden SG50 bonus for 82,000 civil servants. As many will know, civil servants are just cannot make it people who choose to have an iron rice bowl. They don't need to slog like us out in the real world but yet they still get rewarded with $500 for no good reason! What about other Singaporeans like us? We don't deserve this bonus because we not willing to be a government dogs?

Worse is this PAP government is using $41 million in taxpayers dollars to fund this undeserved "bonus". The blood sweat and tears of all the other Singaporeans being used to feed these jiakliaobis civil servants. I find this totally unacceptable.

If you want to give bonus, give to every Singaporean! How can give to only those who are obedient to you and ignore the others who work hard and strike it on their own outside. We are also Singaporeans, even if we don't vote for you, we deserve to have equal treatment....

You should reconsider and extent this bonus to all working Singaporeans or you will see many people vote you out next election. Do the right thing and stop feeding those who already have an iron rice bowl. Care more for us who work in private.

ANGRY CROWDS ABUSED SEA GAMES VOLUNTEERS AT CLOSING CEREMONY

Hundreds of spectators were locked out of the SEA Games closing ceremony on Tuesday, despite having valid tickets for entry. This fiasco resulted after organizers for the event oversold tickets and ended up with more spectators than the National Stadium could accommodate,

In the midst of the chaos on Tuesday, eye witnesses reported ugly incidents where frustrated spectators abused volunteers and security staff at the venue.

According to 23 year-old Ms Teo Su Xin, who waited 40 minutes before she was allowed in, tempers flared in the crowd as the volunteers did their best to manage the huge group of people gathering at the entrances to the stadium.

"We couldn't enter. They (volunteers) said it was a full house and volunteers kept asking us to move from one gate to another and I just followed the crowd, but there was this uncle who was agitated and raised his voice at the volunteers," Ms Teo said. "I don't think they deserved such treatment as they were merely carrying out instructions given to them,"

Mr Mark Tan, who was unable to enter, blamed the organizers for failing to inform and give instructions to the volunteers.

"They were effectively abandoned by whoever should have been coordinating them," he said.

50 year-old Ms Paddy Low, who waited 45 minutes but could not enter the venue, said that the volunteers were put in "a difficult spot". "They didn't know why there was such a situation. I feel srry for them as they kept getting scolded by people."

"The crowd definitely grew rowdy, frustrated and impatient, shouting at the security and volunteer team at Gate 14. A man carrying a baby also shouted at those on duty," says another spectator, who wished to remain anonymous,

"One of the volunteers, a young student, was scolded until she broke down and cried. I don't think that's the way to treat our volunteers. They are just there to help," she added.

IS THE $500 SG50 BONUS ENOUGH TO SWING YOU OVER TO THE PAP?

$

The PAP is sparing no expense to buy votes and win the next GE under the guise of celebrating S'pore's jubilee year.

If S'poreans vote for them again because of this $500, it would be akin to taking the money and slapping themselves because this political model is just not sustainable.
The PAP's hegemony built on political bullying and ruthless and methodical marginalization of political opposition and critics has both intimidated and alienated a significant segment of the population who would otherwise have joined politics and made valuable contributions to the growth of this country.

As one can see over the last 10 years, this is not healthy as S'pore reaches a plateau in terms of economic and social development based on a paradigm that revolves around boosting GDP by importing cheap labour and keeping a docile population attuned to and quietly and unquestioningly following the dictates of the ruling Party.

In fact, under Lee Hsien Loong the future looks bleak as he continues to draw on his military fraternity to fill up ministerial posts. How many of these ex-generals have impressed you or performed up to the standard one expects of anyone who draws more than a million dollar in salary?

Is this the kind of environment you want your children to grow up in?

Let's think about it.

Carefully.

Is your children's future worth only $500 which in effect represents a drop in the ocean considering the billions that this Government collects in the form of various taxes from ERP to COEs to Stamp Duties?

UNITED ENGINEERS COMPANY CHEATED OF $11M BY EMPLOYEES!

United Engineers (UE) Limited, a local environmental engineering and property services company, has been defrauded of over $11 million dollars worth of assets between the financial years 2010 and 2014. Local banking giant Overseas-Chinese Banking Corp is known to have a 20.47% share in the company.

In a statement today, UE announced that a number of employees from a UE subsidiary, United Engineers Developments, were suspended because they had forged proposed contracts so as to award contract tenders to certain preferred third party contractors for their own benefit.

The irregularities were found during a routine audit conducted in late May.

“In these transactions, quotations for proposed contracts were found to have been forged by the Employees. This was carried out with the view of preferring certain third party contractors, which would then be awarded the relevant contracts... Based on available information and pending further inquiries, these transactions appear to have taken place between 2010 and 2015 and the value of the contracts amount to approximately S$11 million.”

Investigations are ongoing and further announcements will be made, said United Engineers.

UE was founded in 1912 and is one of Singapore’s oldest companies involved in the physical and economic development of Singapore. It's board members boasts a list of financial heavyweights, such as Non-Executive Chairman of UE, Mr Tan Ngiap Joo, who is also a director in the board of OCBC.

FEW TAKERS FOR SERVICE JOBS BECAUSE THE SALARY IS TOO LOW?

$

Few takers for services jobs

According to the Today news report “Jobs available in services sector, but few takers” (Jun 18) – “Employment may have shrunk in the services sector with stricter foreign-labour quotas, but businesses in the industry are still looking to fill vacancies in operational and frontline positions.

The long hours and weekend shifts typical of the industry are driving staff away, and there is a constant need to hire to keep businesses going, said employers in the retail, food and hospitality sectors interviewed by TODAY.”

Low pay is the problem?

After reading the above, I had the edgy feeling as to whether the perennial issue of “low pay” is at play here, on top of the “long hours and weekend shifts”.

So, the selected the following parameters in the Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM) occupational wages tool:-

Service and sales workers

Accomodation& food services

Less than 200 employees

Age group: 50 – 59

Gender: females

Less than $1,000 take home pay?

The result is that the monthly basic median salary was only $1,230. The 25th percentile salary was $1,000.

After the maximum 20 per cent employee CPF contribution – the take home pay may be $984 and $800 respectively.

Local workers shrank, despite foreign workers curtailed?

As to “the labour report by the Ministry of Manpower released on Monday showed that the number of people employed in retail trade as well as accommodation and food services fell by 4,800 and 1,800, respectively, in the first quarter of the year.

Executive director of Singapore Retailers’ Association Anthony Gan said the fall “may in large part be attributable to the foreign-worker levy and quota, which have forced many to let go of foreign workers”. The services industry has to comply with lower dependency ratio ceilings (DRC) for existing foreign workers by next month” – don’t you find it rather strange that since foreign worker quotas have been tightened and  job vacancies are at a near record high of 63,700 – why is it that the number of local workers have shrunk?

Weak economy?

As to “sales have also been weak due to falling tourist arrivals. Coupled with hiring challenges, retailers are choosing to downsize or terminate unfavourable store leases, said Mr Gan.

Home-Fix DIY managing director Low CheongKee cited business challenges such as a surge in the number of shopping centres and the advent of e-commerce. He has closed a few outlets in the past two years because of their poor showing, while staff have resigned or have been redeployed”– perhaps the weak economy is the primary reason for the drop in local workers, rather than that Singaporeans do not want to work, despite the low pay.

FOREIGN GRADUATE DENTISTS WORKING WITHOUT VALID LICENSE IN SINGAPORE?

$
0
0

A reader has informed TRE that a bunch of foreign-graduate dentists on conditional registration in Singapore are doing dental work in Little India without any apparent supervision.

The dental clinic at Kerbau Road is called Little India Dentist (www.littleindiadentist.com.sg).

According to its website, Little India Dentist has a team of 4 dentists [Link]:

  1. Dr NiveditaSeerpi, DDS (USA)
  2. Dr MansoorWalipoor, BDS (Adelaide)
  3. Dr YushmeeRamburrun, BDS (Bristol)
  4. Dr Katy Kennedy, BDS (Dundee)

All dentists working in Singapore are regulated by the Singapore Dental Council (SDC), a body constituted under the Dental Registration Act (Chapter 76).

Under this Act, the Council is empowered in Singapore [Link]:

  • to approve or reject applications for registration as a dentist;
  • to issue certificates of registration and practising certificates to registered dentists;
  • to make recommendations to the appropriate authorities on the courses of instructions and examinations;
  • to make recommendations to the appropriate authorities for the training and education of registered dentists;
  • to determine and regulate the conduct and ethics of registered dentists; and
  • generally to do all such acts, matters and things as are necessary to be carried out, or which the Council is authorised to carry out, under the Dental Registration Act.

Searching through the records of SDC [Link], the 4 foreign-graduate dentists are found to have only “Conditional Registration” status. That is to say, none of the dentists in Little India Dentist has full registration:

TRE also found that, except for Dr NiveditaSeerpi, none of the other 3 has registered their “Place of Practice” as Little India Dentist. The 3 have instead registered their place of practice elsewhere:

  • Dr MansoorWalipoorNuffield Dental Kovan
  • Dr YushmeeRamburrunNuffield Healthcare Private Limited
  • Dr Katy Kennedy – Q & M Dental Centre Pte Ltd

What is “Conditional Registration”?

Under section 14A(4) of the Dental Registration Act, dentists under “conditional registration” need to be supervised by a “fully registered Division I dentist” working in the same practice for a specified period (at least 2 years).

The SDC website [Link] further states that dentists under “conditional registration” need to work for a specified period that is equivalent to 2 years full-time of minimum 35 working hours per week under the supervision of a fully registered dentist approved by the Council.

The supervisor must submit a supervisory report on the dentist to the Council every 6 months.

Dentists under conditional registration may apply for conversion to “full registration” after 2 years but this is subject to the Council’s approval.

Also, the supervisor must [Link]:

  1. be a fully registered Division I dentist and
  2. have at least 5 years’ post-BDS experience and
  3. work in the same clinic premises as his/her supervisee

In fact, SDC is quite particular about having full supervision over dentists on conditional registration:

Please note that the supervisory report will determine if the conditionally registered dentist is able to perform his/her duties satisfactorily. The supervisor should exercise due diligence when completing the report for the dentist under his/her charge. Please complete every section of the report. In the event that a supervisor is unable to continue his supervisory duties for the full period of conditional registration, he/she should inform Council immediately and Council will write to the clinic to re-nominate a new supervisor.

SDC is so particular about having dentists on conditional registration supervised by a fully registered dentist that they issued a reminder to all dentists in January [Link]:

Although the risk is small, patients are known to have died from dental treatment gone wrong.

Finally, a criterion for conditional registration requires the dentist to have been approved for employment in Singapore as a dentist in any hospital or other institution or dental practice approved by the Council.

It’s not known if Little India Dentist has been approved by SDC to employ the 4 foreign-graduate dentists who currently hold conditional registration status.

In any case, Little India Dentist does not appear to have any fully registered Division I dentist at the clinic to supervise the 4 conditionally registered dentists.

TRE has emailed SDC for their comments.

According to Thai media reports on Thursday, the first case of Middle East Respiratory Disease (MERS) was detected in the country. However, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha refused to confirm the reports, saying that no MERS patient had been diagnosed in Thailand yet.

Public Health Minister Rajata Rajatnavin said that Thai public health officials were waiting for lab results for confirmation.

The Thailand Public Health Ministry will hold a news conference at 1.30pm (Bangkok time).

Thai Public Health authorities tried to reassure the public and said that the ministry has been taking precautions for the possible emergence of MERS for some time, including monitoring suspected patients with possible symptoms as well as those who have recently returned from the Middle East.

MERS is caused by a coronavirus from the same family as the one that triggered China's deadly 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

JOHOR PRINCE THREATENS SECESSION IN ESCALATING ROYALTY VS MINISTER ROW

The younger brother of the Johor Crown Prince has posted an Instagram screenshot of the Johor's state agreement to become part of the Federation of Tanah Melayu. The photo was not captioned, but supporters of Johor's royal family instantly recognized the significance of the contract.

The agreement inked by the late Sultan Abu Bakar reads that Johor would only agreed to join the federation if Islam remains the official religion of the state, the Johor government has absolute rights over the land in Johor, and that the power of the Johor government should remain in the hands of the Johor Sultanate.

Accordingly, if any of the conditions are violated, Johor would secede from Malaysia.

The post comes after a public row between the Prince's older brother, Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz, who had warned Tunku Ismail to stay out of politics if he does not want to be "whacked".

Mr Nazri comments were a response to Tunku Ismail's criticism of Prime Minister Najib Razak failure to attend an open forum earlier this month to explain the problems with state-owned investment firm, 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

Keen observers say that the brothers' defiance towards Putrajaya runs in the family. Their father, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Sultan Iskandar, is also an open critic of the 6% goods and services tax (GST) introduced by Datuk Seri Najib's government on 1st April.

SOUTH KOREA OFFERS TO PAY S$120,000 TO TOURISTS WHO DIE FROM MERS

In the wake of the worst disease epidemic to strike South Korea in decades, the South Korean government has come up with a desperate measure to soften the blow on the country's tourism industry.

In an initiative that will begin next Monday (22nd June), the South Korean government will pay tourists S$4,039, as well as cover all medical and vacation expenses incurred by tourists if they contract the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). If the tourist succumbs to the disease, South Korea will pay 100 million won (S$120,000) to the family of the deceased tourist.

20 South Koreans have died from the disease so far, while more than a 100 are still struggling to survive the virus. Those who succumbed were mostly elderly or had pre-existing medical conditions.

The South Korean tourism industry has suffered the largest set back in years, with over 100,000 tourists cancelling their trips. In the past, South Korea would see almost 1 million tourists a month, but with the crash in the tourism sector, South Korea's economy is now at a standstill.

Almost 3000 schools have been closed and thousands of people are in quarantine across the country.

A mother and her daughter were on their way home one evening but almost met with a devastating tragedy.

At about 8PM on Tuesday night, 33 year-old Debbie, her daughter, her sister-in-law and her children were walking along Admiralty Drive, a stretch of road that is close to Canberra Primary School, when suddenly, her sister-in-law realized that her handphone was missing.

While searching for her sister-in-law's handphone, Debbie released her daughter's hand for a moment to check if the phone was in her handbag.

But that moment was all it took for her young daughter to dash onto the road and into the path of an oncoming bus. The girl was struck before anyone could react.

Miraculously, the girl received only light injuries despite being hit. She was discharged from the nearby hospital with scratches and bruising on the same day.

by Wan Dan Liao, The Straight Times

Civil servants felt mixed after the Public Service Division announced yesterday that the Government will give a special one-off SG50 payment of $500 to all civil servants, “in recognition of their contribution towards nation building”.

Some civil servants were immensely grateful when informed of this kind gesture from their paymasters. "It's SG50 and I was expecting a $50 special bonus, but now it's $500, I think all civil servants should feel grateful", said PMO media strategist Xiao Bai Gou. "Without the PAP Government, I think Singapore will still be a fishing village today", he added.

Echoing Xiao Bai Gou, Jin Gian Png was similarly pleased with the extra $500 payout. "I just joined Ministry of Health two weeks ago to stocktake N95 masks and this feels like I strike $2 starter prize in 4D. Damn shiok lor work in government!"

However, not all civil servants met the news with optimism. 55 year-old veteran civil servant, Tie Fan Wan, who has spent his whole life in the government mused, "You think $500 a lot ah? You think $5000 meh? PSD give $500 now, you see how much Ministry of Finance take back after GE..."

Whilst there has been criticism that the special SG50 $500 bonus is to sweeten the ground before the looming General Elections, civil servants interviewed dismissed such talk. "$500 is not really a big deal these days. It's like a weekend of drinking or a bag. I won't be really swayed and I will just vote with my heart", confessed 28 year-old HDB officer, Sylvia Low Khiang Khiang.

Nevertheless The Straight Times understands that majority of these servants are just stoic when they heard the news in their offices. "I don't really have an opinion on this (or anything much actually), Government give money I just take. Life goes on", LTA Engineer Jiak Liao Bee wrote on his Facebook status late last night.

The special 0.5 month bonus plus a “special one-off” SG50 payment of $500 for all civil servants will be paid out in mid-July.
