TAXI DRIVER GROUP DEMANDS LTA TO PROTECT THEIR TAXI STANDS

Land Transport Authority

We taxi drivers demand an apology and explanation why email had been surfaced in the internet which contradicts to what you have post in onemotoring?
In your posting, it's said no stopping and parking at all times... so picking up a passenger do not required the vehicle to stop? Maybe only LTA vehicle can able do that?

Lastly, we taxi drivers would want #LTA to re-emphasize that no other vehicles except taxis can stop in the taxi stand! Otherwise, we suggested that LTA to remove all taxi stand and allow taxi to pick up anywhere including bus stop and bus lane!!!!

Mr Ang Hin Kee, for your reference!

PAP FOREIGN MINISTER "ENJOY LIFE" WHILE OUR TERREXES ARE "JAILED" IN CHINA

SMRT Trains Ltd, one of it's director and a former staff were charged over the fatal accident that caused two of their trainees to lose their lives. [https://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/smrt-accident-ceo-desmond-kuek...

SMRT was charged under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, Section 12 of which stipulates that it is the duty of every employer to take measures necessary to ensure the safety and health of employees at work so far as is reasonably practicable.

The director, Teo Wee Kiat was charged under Section 48 (1) - should an offence be committed by a corporate body, an officer of this body shall be guilty of the offence and be liable to be punished.

Anyone found guilty under this Act and has no penalty expressly provided shall be liable to a fine not more than S$200,000 or jail of up to two years, or both. If it is the case of a corporate body, the fine is up to S$500,000.

The former staff, a technician, Lim Say Heng, was charged with causing death by a negligent act under the Penal Code.

It is understood that Lim was fired in September following the tragic accident.

TEO SOH LUNG: CHINA DIDN'T DETAIN TERREX BEFORE DOESN'T MEAN THAT SG WAS DOING THE RIGHT THING

<Facebook post by Soh Lung Teo>

I was startled when I read Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen’s statement in My Paper today. “The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Government will start proceedings to recover the armoured vehicles seized in Hong Kong once the reasons for their detention are made clear”. The report went on to say that Dr Ng said that “… the Terrex has been transported by commercial carriers ever since it was introduced” and that “Singapore has not suffered any loss or detention of equipment prior to this incident.”

The defence minister sounded arrogant and illogical. The fact that China or any other country have not detained the Terrex vehicles in the past surely does not mean that Singapore had all along been doing the right thing. And if Singapore had been transporting such vehicles illegally in the past, it does not mean that China is estopped from taking action now.

China is a world power. Singapore is a small country. Why threaten China with legal proceedings when the vehicles were just detained last week? Shouldn’t the minister use more diplomacy before using threats? What is the point of bragging about its role in arranging two meetings between Taiwan and China in the past? It is childish. He should realise that in real life, one good turn doesn’t always deserve another.

Finally, I am amused at the anger and frustration of the defence minister. It seems to me that the minister and the government are having a taste of what they do to people they govern. The loss of personal properties by an innocent individual cannot be compared to the loss of nine Terrex Infantry Carrier vehicles and other equipment in monetary terms. But the frustration and anger which a person experiences when his or her properties are confiscated by the authority without good reason may be equal if not more than what the minister feels. After all, the minister does not suffer any personal loss since the Terrex vehicles are paid for by taxpayers. In this regard, I am of course thinking of all the properties confiscated by the police just because the offences under investigation are “arrestable offences” and not because there are good reasons for doing so.

Dear Editors,

Don't ever come to this hair salon @ Woodlands Causeway Point unless you desperately need a haircut and it's the only one you could find because the service here is absolutely appalling...

Hairdresser referred to me as "mah fan" thinking I didn't understand Mandarin simply because I wanted to check if she shaved the back properly as I am currently Serving the Nation and we are required to have short hair.

if that's your atittude towards customers, I suggest you get a new job la!

JUSUF KALLA: GLOBAL COMMUNITY SHOULD PAY US TO RESTORE OUR FORESTS

$

Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla says that Indonesia's forests are being destroyed, and wants foreign countries to pay for the damage.

"What happens here is not only our problem. The foreign people also destroyed our forests," said Kalla. He was speaking at the Indonesia Forest Congress in Jakarta yesterday.

"During a big conference in Tokyo, someone said that Indonesia has forests, but they are damaged and should be restored,” said Kalla. “I became angry in front of thousands of people. I said, ‘this is a chair, this is a door, this is a window from my country. You take, and pay $5, and you bring it here, and sell for $100. Indonesian companies just get $5’.

“There is Mitsubishi from Japan, Hyundai and others, they finished what we have. I told them, ‘you have to pay, if not we will cut down all the trees, and let the world feel the heat’. So, the world must also be responsible."

He says Indonesia's peatland restoration efforts should not be funded by the Indonesian government, instead the international community should pay for it. Indonesia set up the Peatland Restoration Agency after the massive forest fires last year. The agency's goal is to restore some two million hectares of damaged peatland, and it needs at least US$1 billion in funding over five years.

RABBIT SO BADLY ABUSED, IT HAD BROKEN LIMBS, RIBS & SPINE

$

A reader shared this heartbreaking story with us.

On October 24, a rabbit owner wrote to us to seek our help to take in her 3 rabbits. She is a young student who had been living in Singapore with an uncle. She adopted the rabbits and brought them home without her uncle’s consent. Since then, their relationship turned sour. Due to limited housing space, the rabbits were often jailbreaking and on a few occasions, the rabbits escaped into the uncle’s room. He would locked them in the toilet with no food and water. One day, the rabbits escaped again and this time, the young lady found the rabbits hurt. The uncle confessed that he had been hitting the rabbits with a wooden rod.

As the case became complicated, we had to gather support. Thankfully, HRSS, SPCA and AVA were aware of this case and with their help, all 3 rabbits were rescued. However, we soon realized one of the rabbits, Apollo, was in an appalling condition. 3 of his legs were broken and he could not move his lower half at all. We took over his care and brought him to The Animal Doctors. Unfortunately, what we uncovered was much more devastating. His lower spine was fractured and almost all his ribs were broken. The old injuries may have healed but the long term abuse had put a strain on Apollo. He lost all senses to his limbs, he cannot defecate on his own, and no medication in his world could heal him. We even brought Apollo to see Dr Landon, our top surgical specialist, but his injuries were so severe that there was no solution. We were helpless.

Apollo was hospitalized at TAD for the next few days and cared for by their dedicated medical team. They could tell that despite the paralysis, Apollo was lively and has a will to live. Soon, we discharged him and brought him back to the wonderland. He was put on long-term pain relief and we had to express his bladders every few hours. He could not control his bowel and need daily rinsing of his bottoms. All we could do is to keep him comfortable and buy him some time to enjoy some peace. Apollo seemed to know and was very cooperative. Despite all the challenges he had, Apollo would greet our volunteers when they visit. We could see he thoroughly enjoyed the attention, especially the headrubs and nose kisses. Unfortunately, good times never last. On the morning of November 21, Apollo collapsed. He was rushed to TAD and placed on oxygen support. He showed signs of neurological disorder and his condition was critical. He was stabilized for a few hours but unfortunately, his body was too weak. He passed away. He was only 3 years old.

Apollo’s tragedy is a pain that will never go away in our hearts. WHY did such an ill-fate befall on an innocent animal? HOW did he end up in such a compromised situation? and WHO so evil would do such a hedious act to him? There are just so many questions in our mind that seems so easy to answer yet so hard to comprehend. His case was investigated by AVA (AVA-16-075897) and we are waiting for the final verdict. We know that Singapore laws are too weak to protect the animals. We seek every animal lover to SHARE the story, every media to publicize on this case. Apollo's story should never be left unheard. He deserves justice!

The courts have charged SMRT Trains Ltd, one of its directors and a former employee, who was with the two deceased SMRT trainees on the date of the accident, guilty of offences under the Workplace Safety and Health Act and the Penal Code.

SMRT was charged with failing its duty as an employer to take measures necessary to ensure the safety and health of employees at work so far as is reasonably practicable. SMRT Chief Technology Officer Ng Bor Kiat received the charge on behalf of the company.

One of its directors, Teo Wee Kiat, was charged under the act as under the act, when a corporation commits an offence, an officer of this body shall be guilty of the offence and be liable to be punished.

According to the law, anybody found guilty under this Act and has no penalty expressly provided shall be liable to a fine not more than S$200,000 or jail of up to two years, or both. If it is the case of a corporate body, the fine is up to S$500,000.

Lim Say Heng, the technician who stood ahead of the two trainees when the accident took place, was charged with causing death by a negligent act under the Penal Code.

Lim was the person in charge of the work party accessing the train tracks that day, and he failed to ensure that the necessary safety measures were in place to make sure trains do not enter the train track while they were there, according to the charge sheet. He was one of two employees sacked in September.

Ayunda Lestari Dayuki, 24, punched her employer's 2 year-old son after she got into an argument with her employer. She was jailed 4 months for ill treating the child at her employer's Bukit Batok flat on 22 September 2016.

She also admitted to hitting the boy's head with a wooden toilet brush.

Ayunda had started working for the family in September last year.

On 21 September, her employer checked her home's CCTV and found the maid sleeping in the living room while she was out at work, instead of taking care of the 2 year-old boy. Her employer called her up and scolded her for sleeping.

The next day, her husband discovered a reddish mark and swelling on the back of the boy's head.

Investigations found that Ayunda had hit the boy on the head when he refused to bath and started to cry. She punched the back of his head 3 times and used a toilet brush to hit his head.

COLD STORAGE SOLD ME STINKING, ROTTING SWEET POTATOES

$

This post was shared with us by a reader.

I bought these sweet potatoes less than 24 hours ago from CS Cluny Court.

When i opened the bag, the potatoes had a foul smell. I cut one of them and the skin started shrinking where the part that has gone bad started appearing.

I bought two packs. One of them was ok. The other one was clearly gone bad i got rid of it immediately.

Thinking i bought 4 pieces of good and healthy sweet potatoes for 19.98 SGD!!

As you can see in the photo, this is not something you want to pay 9.99 SGD just to bring home and throw it away. This is UNACCEPTABLE.

I thought Cold Storage had better and fresher products. How can this type of vegetable be kept for so long and be sold for such an expensive price? The customer won't even be able to inspect what they're buying since it's sealed.

I am HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED.

The National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU) said that the appeals against the dismissal of two SMRT staff following the fatal track accident are still pending.

NTWU’s executive secretary Melvin Yong said that the union will continue to support Lim who was charged with causing death by a negligent act. They will ensure that Lim is fairly represented.

Mr Yong added that it was important to allow due process to take its course.

TAXI DRIVER ALLEGEDLY IGNORES MAN WITH WALKING STICK, CHOSE PASSENGER ON OPP SIDE OF THE ROAD

<Facebook post by Cindy Wong‎>

I flagged this comfort cab SHA 2409S this morning to work with my Brother with a walking stick. The cab driver signalled and stopped few metres before reaching me so I thot he is taking me. Instead he looked at a Negro man standing opposite the road and picked him. I was so annoyed why the cab driver picked him instead of me when he didn't flagged for this cab. Obviously he is choosing his customers. I have dropped a feedback to Comfort waiting for their reply and want to publicly shame him to condone his own actions.

Every morning I will see comfort cab whinned past me and refused to pick me just become of my short distance from Simei to Changi Airport. They preferred to make a few rounds instead very absurd right. Also in the event of heavy downpour I will take cab home from airport. I see cab Drivers giving me that angry look wow going to Simei after I queued for hours. Think cab drives needs to be educated that they should not joined the airport queue if they don't want to ferry customers for short distance ride at least it fair for us to tolerate such behaviours. We have paid for $3 Airport surcharge and they should be happy and not look disgruntled.

CIRCLE LINE SIGNAL FAULT WAS SOLVED BY DATA SCIENTISTS NOT ENGINEERS

<<Circle Line Signal Interference – A Slice of Electronic Warfare for DSTA and DSO>>

In modern battles, the opponent who rules the airwaves has the decisive advantage. We have many professionals in DSTA Defence Science and Technology Agency and DSO National Laboratories who spend a good part of their careers becoming experts in this field. So when our Circle Line had problems with signal interference, it presented an opportunity for them to help and put their expertise to good use.

DSTA engineers Mui Whye Kee and Cheng Heng Ngom (who won the Defence Technology Prize this year and last year respectively), Benedict Koh, and the DSO team led by Chian Teck Keong assisted LTA to get to the source of the problem.

They first showed that radio signals could indeed disrupt trains. But where were the rogue signals coming from? Like good detectives, they analysed the clues, eliminated other suspects and caught the culprit – train PV46 carrying faulty hardware.

That just one “rogue” train could jam the entire system shows the importance of electronic warfare and I’m glad we have the experts to defend us.

(Photo: DSTA engineers Cheng Heng Ngom, Wong Rong Fah, Benedict Koh and Mui Whye Kee (left to right) are part of the core team that helped trace the source of the train issue.)

HOW COME SMRT MAKE STAFF AS SCAPEGOATS BUT MAINTAIN MOST OF TOP MGMT?

$

Dear Editors,

I would like to put it a point that SMRT is a leopard that never change its spots. With so many screw ups going on, and when a major ones occurred, like what happened in February where two staffs were killed on job, the SMRT top managements are still as usual, covering their own ass by finding two scapegoats to "die" for the company. It's totally absurd as it just don't make sense!

I felt sorry for those holding managerial posts in SMRT as at any time, they will be made to die in the company whereby the Chiefs will just sit back and relax and watch how their scapegoat going to die for them without any form of sympathy or recognition of their sacrifices.

Audiences, please share your views, do you think that it's time for LTA to take over full assets of SMRT and get foreign operators like Tower Transit to take over SMRT instead? I think they will do a better job and it's time to kick those chiefs out.

LTA: WE ARE STEPPING UP ENFORCEMENT AGAINST UNLICENSED PRIVATE HIRE CARS

$

<Facebook post by Land Transport Authority>

Are you a fan of private hire car services?

For passenger safety, LTA is stepping up enforcement against unlicensed private hire cars. More frequent checks will be conducted at hotspots, such as Clarke Quay, Resorts World Sentosa and East Coast Seafood Centre, to weed out those plying illegally for fares.

LTA has recently charged one driver under the Road Traffic Act for plying illegally for fares and charging exorbitant fares for rides. He was fined a total of $15,000, disqualified from driving for a year and LTA is seeking to forfeit his car.

We have also issued warnings to 19 others who were involved in using unlicensed private cars or private hire cars to ply illegally for fares.

LTA would like to remind the public that private hire cars are not allowed to be hired through street hails, nor stop or park at taxi stands.

If you spot any such incidents, you can call 1800-CALL LTA (1800-2255 582) or write to us at http://www.lta.gov.sg
