SMRT CEO PAID UP TO $2.5M LAST YEAR DESPITE COMPANY'S FALLING SERVICE STANDARDS

$

SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek has come under fire from netizens recently after SMRT released its annual report on Monday.

In the report, Kuek's salary was reported to be in the range of S$2.25 to S$2.5 million, which is a 309% jump in just 3 years.

According to these figures, Mr Kuek is now SMRT's highest paid SMRT CEO. When he first joined the company in 2012, he was paid S$611,000 in the first 6 months.

Highly unpopular former SMRT CEO, Saw Phaik Hwa, was also drawing a similar figure, S$1.85 million, when she quit in 2012. Her salary then was a record high pay scale in the company, and had topped another record salary that she received in 2010 when she earned S$1.67 million.

Kuek's salary now dwarfs the salaries of rival company CEOs from ComfortDelgro and SBS Transit.

ComfortDelgro, which is a much larger company compared to SMRT Corp, pays its CEO S$1.75 to S$2 million.

SBS transit however, pays its CEO Mr Gan Huay Kiat, only S$500,000 to S$750,000.

According to a SMRT spokesman, SMRT did not think the remuneration earned by Kuek was out of place, and instead said that the package was similar to other "peer companies". He also defended the CEO and said that "the new CEO's tasks were more daunting than before".

Yet service standards have yet to see a marked increase in reliability. In December 2014, even mainstream media reported that MRT service breakdowns had hit “a four-year high”.

An online video showing 4 PRC teenagers beating and using lit cigarettes to abuse a younger boy while he is bound by rope has gone viral on social media.

The incident took place in a dimly lit house, and the boy can be heard painfully screaming for mercy throughout the 2 minute 11 seconds long clip.

The video first appeared on social media in Zhejiang province on Sunday, but quickly spread like wildfire as netizens rained anger and abuse on the abusers.

Qingyuan county police announced later on Sunday that four suspects had been taken into custody.

According to police, the bullies were students at a county junior secondary school, while the boy in the video was in Primary One.

"STEPFATHER" MOLESTS UNDERAGE DAUGHTER AS PART OF "SPIRITUAL CLEANSING"

$

A 31 year-old man told his girlfriend that he wanted to perform "spiritual cleansing" on her teen daughter, but ended up fondling her breasts and touching her genitals instead.

In October last year, the man moved into the Bukit Merah flat of his then-girlfriend and her daughter. On the night he moved in, he told the mother that he wanted to perform "spiritual cleansing" for her daughter.

He said this would involve massaging the victim's body. The mother agreed because the man had not said anything about touching the victim in a sexual manner.

The three of them went to sleep together that night in the living room of the one-room HDB unit, with the victim lying in the middle.

At about 3am, the teenager was awakened by the accused, who had slipped his hand underneath her clothes and was touching her stomach. Fearful of what might happen if she screamed, she kept quiet and pretended to sleep.

Emboldened by her lack of resistance, the man moved his hand and fondled her left breast for 3 minutes before getting up to talk to her mother. After that, he returned to the room, laid down next to the victim who continued to feign sleep.

Thinking that she did not notice, he put his hands into the victim's shorts and touched her genitals. Upon feeling some pain, she got up and walked away to sit on the sofa. She remained awake and traumatized, staring at her handphone until dawn when she left for school.

Later that day, she told her aunt about the molestation and filed a police report, in which she referred to the accused as her stepfather.

The court charged the man with 2 charges of criminal use of force to outrage the girl's modesty. The court also heard that the man had been convicted for an unrelated case of underage sex.

Prosecutors argued that the man had abused the girl's trust as her surrogate father figure, and that he had stopped just short of committing the more serious sexual penetration of a minor.

Tha man faces up to 2 years jail, caning, a fine or any combination of the three for each of the 2 charges.

‘I didn’t feel I was the target of pity. The whole process was full of respect and equality.

DESPITE HAVING EMPTY BEDS, TTSH MADE MY AILING MOTHER SLEEP IN THE CORRIDOR

$
0
0

On June 1, my mother, who is 73 years old and has dementia, suffered a sudden high fever and had to be taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s accident and emergency (A&E) department.

It was discovered that she had chronic urinary tract infection and needed to be admitted to receive intravenous antibiotics.

As a subsidised patient, she is eligible for a bed in a B2 ward. However, due to a bed crunch, she was placed in the corridor of Ward 10C for four days.

During these four days, besides trying to recover from the infection, she also had to put up with sleeping on an A&E bed, which is narrower and more uncomfortable than a ward bed, a lack of privacy, noise, and more difficulty in getting to a bathroom.

I was told that if there were discharges, she could be placed in one of the rooms.

Thus, I followed up with the nurses every day. I even told them that I did not mind any ward as long as my mother was put in a proper room and bed.

On June 4, I saw that there were two empty beds in Ward 10C. I thought my mother could move into one, but the nurse told me that the beds were reserved for others.

I was flabbergasted and decided to discharge my mother and go to a private hospital, as I did not want her to sleep in the corridor any more.

When I requested the discharge, I was informed that my mother could move into one of the empty beds immediately.

When I asked why my request to move was denied earlier, the nurse said she was not sure, as the bed allocation was done by another department. I asked to speak with the bed management administrator, but was told that I could not.

Tending to a sick parent is already very stressful. The bed allocation issue adds on unnecessary pressure.

I urge the hospital to be more transparent and to have clearer communication with patients and their family members on bed allocation matters.

S'POREANS BEWARE: GIVE US ONE CHICKEN WING, COLLECT BACK WHOLE CHICKEN

$

0

Comes Aug 09, 2015, Singapore will be 50 years old after the separation or rather “kicked out” from Malaysia in the year 1965. Since last year, the celebration of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee is splashed all over and is an oft repeated or used in all kinds of promotional gimmicks.

The PAP government is pulling all plugs to persuade Singaporeans to celebrate and enjoy the 50th years anniversary of our nation’s birth. We have come a long way and its time to be joyous. So it seems….

The government fire the first shot with the PGP, the so-called subsidised medical incentive honoring the pioneering generation. Then subsequently, we have:

SG50 payout to Pioneers, be it cash or in kind and from next year onwards, annually
SG50 Pioneer package of public transport top-up, kopi-tiam discounts, shopping discount vouchers, etc
SG50 National Day goodie packs
Extra public holiday declared
And the most recent, SG50 $500 payout to civil servants.

Netizens are wondering, never have the ruling party been so generous, what is their agenda? What is cooking in their “sick” mind? Is it vote buying as the next GE cannot be held later than Jan 2017 and the ground is deemed “sweet”? Can it be a case of giving you with the left hand and taking back with the right?

There is even speculation that it is the same old tactic of giving you $1 and taking back $10 back in future. The other analogy is giving you a single chicken wing and collecting a whole chicken back by other means in the future.

Netizens are repeating and regurgitating the “give-$1-take-back-$10″ kind of worry. This is nonsensical and preposterous.

How can you doubt our talent-stuffed government? They are definitely made of better stuffs than spinning the battered old record over and over again. After all, they are the scoured relentlessly and these are the best in the land.

You can either agreed or disagreed, hmm… this somehow sounds rather familiar. Reminds me of its either in or out …….. Anyhow, lets not digress too far off. Allow me to explain and put in perspective my thoughts on the stone age give-$1-take-back-$10 logic.

To me, the collections of monies started way back when:

The alcohol tax was increase by 25% with the ridiculous “it has not been increased for the last 25 years” excuse
Of course we also have ERPs sprouting all over the islands with the “jams” excuse even though car population and town plannings are all done by government
Tobacco tax increased to “take care of your health”
Petrol tax inceased even though crude oil price was reduced by more than 50%.
C&S charges increased even though PAP’s TC contractors are charging them less.
So gentle(wo)men, you see, its no more giving you $1 and taking back $10 over a period of time in the future. Now, Its taking money and putting into the pocket first before I decide how much to rebate and to whom, selectively.

Certain group will cry foul and will use examples where the government gives $50 in transportation top-up to the Pioneers and there is also the KopiTiam 30% discounts for beverages.

Let’s look at the $50 transport top-up for Pioneers. Why die die must increase fare prices after crude busted the US$50 per barrel price? Why give millions in incentives to the transport companies for service improvement when its their basic requirement to do so. Moreover, commuters’ perception is that there is no improvement in service. So much leeway given to them that they are recording high profits all round. If you look at it deeper, you will realise who the majority shareholders are. Put two and two together, you will most probably get the answer.

How about KopiTiam’s 30% discounts on beverages for Pioneers? Well, beforehand there was that quiet $0.10 increase for beverages in their neighbourhood coffeshops. If you do a simple calculation, the actual discount of kopi-O before and after the stealth price hike is actually only a 22% discount.

Not only that, if you beak down the kopi-O drinkers to 4 age groups, namely, 20~34, 35~49, 50~64 and 65~80 (pioneers) years old. Assuming 10 kopi-O drinkers order 10 cups per day for all age groups, you will find that overall they actually made an extra profit of $0.30. Now, multiply the extra daily profit by 30,000 for a estimated total figure of 1.2m consumers and you will be shocked at the figure.

Let’s also not forget that all these extra taxes and price increases are permanent while any discounts, offers or subsidies is not. In the end, we are one that got the blunt end of the bolt.

The Chinese has a saying: “羊毛出在羊身上”. Literally, it means “wools grow from the body of a sheep”. It is to denote that the source is from within.

Thus, whatever monies that are splurged during this Golden Jubilee comes from somewhere and we are the most likely source. Yup, monies from you and me, collected to be redistributed to whoever they have fancied for and to their advantage. In the past, we take the money and enjoyed first, then we get screwed. Now, we get screwed first and then maybe, just maybe, you can enjoy a little bit if you are lucky.

In other words, we common people got screwed again, OUCH!

61 year-old Zeng Guo Yuan is a familiar political face to Singaporeans. But despite being dressed in his iconic white robes, Zeng, who recently underwent surgery to remove his nose because of cancer, is a former shadow of himself.

Now gaunt and less energetic than he used to be, he was spotted by curious passersby recently selling tissues near the popular Guan Yin Temple in Bugis.

When reporters approached him, Zeng had 10 packets of tissue displayed on a make-shift table in front of his wheelchair. The wound from his nose operation has yet to fully heal. He also revealed that he is suffering from bone and intestinal colorectal cancer, and that doctors had given him only 6 months to live.

In spite of his plight, some people are still skeptical about Zeng Guo Yuan's condition. A netizen was suspicious about Zeng's condition, noting that Zeng was selling tissues on a wheelchair but would stand up push his wheel chair to his motorized scooter and pack up at the end of the day.

However, Zeng defended himself and says that he is too weak to walk around and stand for hours, hence he relies on a wheelchair to move. He claims that he lives, eats and sleeps on his scooter as he sold his house on 1st May to pay his debts.

When asked about his family, he sighed and told reporters "not to talk about his family" anymore.

SELFISH AUNTIE REFUSES TO SHARE SEATS IN CAFE DESPITE LARGE CROWDS

Dear A.S.S.,

I was queuing up in the Hans cafe at Holland today with colleagues.

As the cafe was very crowded, and we saw this lady sitting alone at a table of 6, we asked her politely if she would mind sharing a table with us.

She told us that the seats at her table were taken, so we said it was ok and moved off.

But I was very suspicious of her because she didn't look like she came to lunch with anybody. She had been sitting at the table for a while and had already started eating her food. So we waited, and then we realized that for the next few minutes no one came over to sit at her table and no one even spoke a word to her!

Obviously she's just being a selfish, inconsiderate person who doesn't want to share tables with strangers. Although I understand it is uncomfortable to eat with others you don't know, but it doesn't mean that you can hog a 6 seat table during the lunch time crowd! Everyone around her was just waiting and staring before she finally left and other people could take her place.

So inconsiderate!

LOCAL DJ: DON'T BE A HYPOCRITE ABOUT PRC YULIN DOG FESTIVAL

$

Netizens have been up in arms protesting in the wake of a recent dog and lychee eating festival in Yulin, a town located in Guangxi in south west China.

They have accused the PRCs in Yulin of cruelty, and are responding with a large plethora of petitions, boycotts and viral images showing dogs caged and slaughtered brutally for their meat, which is considered a delicacy in Yulin.

However, some netizens have questioned the double standards applied to dogs versus all other farm bred animals which are consumed by meat eaters. Some say that even vegetarians who consume diary products are not exempt from hypocrisy when condemn the Yulin dog festival, because keeping an animal alive solely for their milk before killing them when they have "served their purpose" does not seem very humane either.

Even local celebrities have weighed in on the debate, with popular DJ Rosalyn Lee giving her frank views on the morality of the Yulin festival in a recent Facebook post.

"Many of you have written to me asking for my support in spreading the word about stopping the Yulin Festival. i was hesitant for the longest time, for fear of being a hypocrite," She wrote.

"First and foremost, i am a meat eater. i love my ribs, steaks, char siew. and ill always try to buy from responsible farm sources who slaughter their animals in the most "humane" way possible - but then again, what is "humane" when we're gonna fuckin kill the animal for food anyway?"

Comparing the slaughter of farm animals to dogs, she concluded that "Its no different with dogs. I'll admit, seeing pictures of our furry friends crammed in cages makes me sick. but why do i feel more grossed out at the sight of these poor dogs than i would a cage of crammed chickens or pigs? Perhaps as the article suggests: dog = friend, farm animals = food? Does that make slaughtering ok? Tough question but my stance is, as a meat eater: as long as we dont waste food, i say why the hell not?"

Rosalyn also shared that she had recently gotten her family a dog and feels disturbed by the thought of her pet being captured and slaughtered. However, she admits that "I'll feel nothing if a lil' piggy met with that fate. As you can see, I'm still struggling with the moral dilemma of this. But til I sort it out, I will not be slamming the Yulin Festival. As the saying goes: "whats normal to the spider is chaos to the fly.""

In response to a petition from a group of angry residents residing at Centrale 8, a Design, Build and Sell Scheme housing project in Tampines, Tampines Town Council chairman Baey Yam Keng has informed residents via email that a "special taskforce" headed by Education Minister HengSweeKeat will look into their concerns.

"It will be led by a small group of experienced grasssroots leaders, supervised by Minister Heng himself personally," said Mr Baey, PAP MP for TampinesGRC. He added that Heng has taken a "personal interest" in this matter and was confident the matter could be resolved amicably.

In their petition, residents from 400 of the 708 units at Centrale 8 called for compensation and an extension of the one-year-warranty period for the developer to rectify the defects. They also complained that inferior quality materials were used to construct their units.

This latest fiasco comes in the wake of similar complaints from residents of other DBSS projects such as The Peak @ ToaPayoh, Trivelis and more recently, PasirRis One.

In response to the news about the "special taskforce", SimLian Group Limited CEO Kuik Sin Pin issued a statement of their own, informing residents that Centrale 8 was constructed "in accordance with building plans approved by... the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)."

Kuik wrote that SimLian and its main contractor remain "committed to carry out all defect rectification requests within each unit owner's defects liability period".

HUGE SWARM OF BEES GATHERS OUTSIDE SENGKANG FLATS

$

Thousands of bees swarmed into blocks 122 and 122E along Sengkang East Way on Monday night, forcing residents to shut their doors and windows tightly.

According to residents there, the bees swarmed around the block and windows of their flats, flew into corridors, lifts, the multipurpose pavilion and managed to get into 8 flat units.

More than 100 residents in these blocks were affected.

One 64 year-old resident Ms Lin told the media that she got a fright of her life when she saw the bees in the corridor when she returned home at 8pm.

"After I got home, I closed the windows and main door tightly, but there were already more than 10 bees that got in. Early the next day, when I took my granddaughter out, I saw dead bees all over the corridors and outside the lifts. My granddaughter screamed and did not dare to move. She was in such a panic."

Another 68 year-old resident Ms Fan said she put on a raincoat before leaving her house to avoid getting stung.

"Just to be sure, I wore a raincoat, but luckily the bees didn't attack me. Because the floor was covered with dead bees, the maid came out to clear them and pricked her finger."

At about 12.30PM on Tuesday, the Town Council sent a pest exterminator to help residents deal with the bees. Pest exterminator Mohammad Safuan responded to the scene.

Speaking to the media, Safuan said that the bees were there only temporarily and might have been drawn to the lights at night. He assured residents that the bees had not begun building a nest. He would clear the bees by spraying them with chemicals.

A beehive was reportedly found in a nearby multipurpose hall a few months ago, with pest exterminators being called in then as well.

ANG MOH SUICIDE ATTEMPT THWARTED BY SCDF, DIES BY BURNING CHARCOAL INDOORS

At about 5AM yesterday, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted by residents of a Shenton Way condominium about a potential suicide jumping in progress.

Residents observed that a 33 year-old Caucasian man, who resided in the 34th floor of the condominium, had been behaving strangely and loudly proclaiming that he wanted to kill himself.

When the SCDF and police were informed, a Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team was dispatched to the scene, along with fire engines and an ambulance.

Unfortunately, while the SCDF rushed to set up a protective cushion at the bottom of the man's apartment block, he suddenly changed his mind and locked himself indoors and became very quiet.

Sensing that something was amiss, police officer knocked on door of the apartment unit to check on the man's condition but received no response. Police broke through the door of the home only to find that the man had succeeded in killing himself by burning charcoal in his apartment. Paramedics confirmed that the man had already stopped breathing by the time that police found him, and declared him dead at the scene.

Police are investigating the case as "unnatural death".

DAMAI SEC STUDENT POSTED ABOUT HIS SUICIDE PLANS MONTHS BEFORE HE DIED

16 year-old Aloysius from Damai Secondary School committed suicide 3 nights ago in his family flat at Block 602, Bedok Reservoir Road, where he was discovered hanging from the ceiling by his distraught parents. Friends and relatives have all expressed shock at his suicide, with many wondering what drove him to desperation.

Yet some classmates and friends of Aloysius have been blaming themselves for not spotting the tell tale signs of Aloysius' plans for suicide.

According to a friend of Aloysius, the 16 year-old was not popular in school, although he had many friends outside of school. This is why Aloysius hated school and posted often on his twitter account about his feelings of loneliness in school.

Another unnamed friend of Aloysius said that since February this year, Aloysius had started showing signs of depression, which may have contributed to Aloysius' decision to end his life.

"His (Aloysius') tweets were extreme and he complained about his loneliness in school. He said that he felt alone and helpless, and asked his friends whether they could give them some of their happiness. He even said that there is nothing that he could be happy about in life."

His tweets became more desperate by March and April, as he began openly posting about his thoughts of suicide and searched for ways to kill himself online.

After 28th May, Aloysius suddenly stopped posting updates on his twitter.

However, on the night just before he committed suicide, he posted a cryptic message hinting that he would act on his plan soon: "My night is near"

Aloysius hanged himself the night after, the same date as his birthday.

THE JUDGE IS TRYING HER BEST TO NOT GIVE AMOS YEE A CRIMINAL RECORD

$

Almost no credit is given in cyberspace that the judge iseems to be trying her best to uphold the law while looking after the long term welfare of Amos.

Below are two posts from Facebook that explain what the judge seems to be doing.

But let’s be very clear: the reformative training suitability report says that he is physically and mentally suitable for reformative training, even if he is autistic. Juz being autistic doesn’t give anyone the right to break the law and evade responsibility.

Actually I see a judge desperately trying not to give Amos a record. When he flaunted bail conditions he tied her hands. She’s in a really difficult place. To let him go free is setting a precedence for others to disregard rules as well. That’s why I wished ay could have just taken a step back lose the battle for now and wait it out. Then again he’s a recalcitrant teenager! Not sure whether he may also have some psychological issues. A good test is not harmful especially if it can save him some unnecessary trauma. The first step of charging him was wrong. It just spiralled downwards and AY certainly did not help himself. A real tragedy!

And here’s what someone who I personally know and who works with autistic kids says in the same thread. In addition to talking about the judge, he also gives an explanation of the mandatory treatment order (MTO) that the judge is exploring.

The MTO is a relatively new sentencing option iwhich requires an offender suffering from psychiatric conditions to undergo treatment in lieu of imprisonment.

If offender completes treatment successfully, he/she will be cleared of conviction.

Prior to this sentencing option being made available to judges, people with mental disorders were imprisoned. We can just do a google search for people with very low IQ who were sentenced to time in prison for offences such as outrage of modesty before this sentencing option was made available. Some people with mental conditions like intellectual disability, may not understand what offence they may have caused.

In that sense, I appreciate the new sentencing option.

[Err let’s give the Pet minister who also happens to be the law minister credit for this. And the PAP administration too.]

Just like intellectual disability, ASD is also on the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual IV.

Only a qualified person can diagnose where in the Spectrum a person diagnosed with ASD is (Asperger’s or whatever). I am not qualified, so I will not speculate.

IMO, the judge may be bending over backwards not to leave him with a criminal record – which is good as Amos is only a young boy.

I am not sure if MTO mandates institutional care once the diagnosis has been made, or if the ‘offender’ can commit to a term of outpatient care.

I personally feel that Amos should not be institutionalised.

On the last sentence, it takes two to tango and two hands to clap.

The “yaya papapaya”, that is Amos, had spat on the offer of probation that the state had preferred and which his lawyer and his doting mother Mary advised him to accept. And he has reposted the offending material, and posted nasty comments about the judge. And he had earlier broken his bail conditions. All these and the false allegation that his bailor had molested him and his flip floppng on an apology to the bailor make him a one-boy clear and present danger to other S’poreans, who is unlikely to be prepared to undergo outpatient treatment.

Best if he’s locked up until he responds to treatment if he can be treated.

If not bring on the Reformative Training Centre, a heavily structured programme for young offenders involving military-style training as well as counselling, which can last up to 30 months.

And do remember, the reformative training suitability report says that he is physically and mentally suitable for reformative training, even if he is autistic. Juz being autistic doesn’t give anyone the right to break the law and evade responsibility.

DR ANG YONG GUAN: THE MANAGING OF AMOS YEE'S CASE IS BAFFLING

I find the whole saga of “managing Amos” baffling. First, months ago, Amo's mother told the court that Amos was assessed on 2 separate occasions before the trial began, by IMH psychiatrist(s).

Weeks later in court, when he rejected probation, he was remanded in prison for 3 weeks to assess his suitability for RTC (Reformative Training Centre). What was the diagnosis given to Amos by the team of psychiatrists and psychologists who assessed him? Did they agree with Dr Winslow that Amos has ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder)? Was their report tendered in court yesterday (23 June 2015)?

If they had concluded that Amos is NOT suitable for RTC, couldn’t they also comment whether Amos is suitable for MTO (Mandatory Treatment Order) because after all, all psychiatrists, besides diagnosing a patient, are also supposed to provide a treatment plan (which will include medications, counselling, treatment (e.g. MTO as an outpatient or an in-patient in an institution such as RTC or IMH) and support for caregivers.

Now, is the remand at IMH for a further 2 weeks to assess his suitability for MTO (Mandatory Treatment Order) necessary? Especially after spending a gruelling 3 weeks in remand, also for the purpose of assessment? Hence, in total, we are saying Amos needs 5 weeks for assessment, first for suitability for RTC and now, for MTO!

Instead of remand at IMH for 2 weeks, shouldn’t Amos be assessed as an outpatient regarding suitability for MTO? Moreover, shouldn’t the psychiatrist(s) who had seen previously him at IMH also provide a report to the court to state a) their diagnosis of Amos and b) whether he is suitable for MTO?

Essentially, what the judge needs to know are: a) what is the diagnosis? (Thus far, at least 3 sets of psychiatrists had seen him: IMH, prison and Dr Winslow). b) What kind of “treatment” (if needed at all) is best for Amos given the diagnosis of these psychiatrists? RTC or MTO or etc. c) if he needs further assessment can it be done as an outpatient?

Finally, conventional psychiatric treatment does not work for some teenagers with ASD. What Amos needs are creative mental health professionals who can customise a treatment plan specifically for him so as to engage him and motivate him to have healthy ways of coping and mastering life.

For instance, the Israeli Defense Force achieved a series of operational successes recently thanks to a group of soldiers with autism who contributed their unique abilities to Intelligence Unit 9900. Read the article here:
