In a statement to the media, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Sam Tan has announced that he will contest the Radin Mas Single Member Constituency (SMC) seat in the upcoming General Elections (GE).
"Since 2006 I've been serving. I've implemented two 5-year plans to further improve and upgrade the software, hardware and heartware here. I hope the residents continue to give me the strong mandate," he said at a press conference held in a coffeeshop in Tanjong Pagar Plaza.
Mr Tan was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) from 2006 to 2011 before moving to Radin Mas SMC for the last round of polls. He is also Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth, and previously served as parliamentary secretary in several ministries. Prior to entering politics, Mr Tan worked at the People’s Association from 1983 to 1992 and then the Chinese Development Assistance Council until 2009.
At the last GE, he won with 67.1% of the vote against National Solidary Party candidate Yip Yew Weng. He will face off against Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam’s Reform Party this coming election.
