Pirates who had boarded a barge in the Singapore Strait yesterday were shocked when barely minutes after boarding the hijacked vessel, they spotted a Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) warship headed right towards them.
Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore says it received a distress call at 9.07AM yesterday morning from the tugboat Permata 1 about pirates boarding and looting its barge. The RSN Maritime Security Task Force (MSTF) was immediately dispatched on the RSS Resilience and arrived at the incident site at 9.21AM.
Seeing the approaching warship, the pirates fled into Indonesian waters, leaving the crew safe and unharmed.
The RSN quickly relayed information on the incident to the Indonesian Western Fleet Sea Security Group and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, which deployed their assets and successfully arrested the robbers in their turf. The stolen cargo was also recovered.
