32 year-old Kartija's crime spree finally came to an end yesterday when she was convicted of 5 counts of extortion and sentenced to 2 years and 8 months jail yesterday.
The 32 year-old had managed to force an elderly 66 year-old man to hand over $1000 worth of cash and smart phones within a period of 2 weeks from 23rd December 2013 and 1st January 2014.
All this after she met the elderly man at a Prime supermarket at Block 472, Tampines Street 44.
According to court documents, Kartija met the man on 23rd December 2013 and struck up a conversation with him. She convinced the elderly man to walk to a nearby block under the pretext that she was interested in having a friendly conversation with him. After walking to a more deserted area, she then exchanged phone numbers and introduced herself to the man, claiming that she needed money desperately to look after her children.
After she failed to convince the man to lend her $100, Kartija turned on the man and threatened to report him to the police for molest if he did not accede to her demands for money. Fearful that Kartija would lodge a false police report, the man followed Kartija as she walked towards the nearby police post.
Seeing that the man had followed her all the way to the police post, Kartija warned the man not to enter the police post. Once inside the police post, she told police officers that the elderly man had performed indecent actions on her. However, when asked whether she would like to lodge an official police report, she declined saying that she knew the man and his wife and would not press charges.
Kartija walked out of the police post and told the victim to pay her a sum of money or she would tell the police to press charges. Worried that the police report would cause trouble to his family, the elderly man had no choice but to fork out the remaining $50 cash that he was carrying with him.
The next day, Kartija forced the elderly man to sign mobile phone plans worth up to $300 and hand 2 newly bought phones, an iPhone 5S and Galaxy Note 3, to Kartija. On the third day, Kartija called the elderly man again and forced him to hand over $300, which the man had to borrow from a friend, so that she would not press her false charges.
A few days later, Kartija forced the man to buy another mobile plan and hand over a new Sony Xperia phone.
Unwilling to put up with Kartija's repeated extortion, the elderly man finally went to the police and reported her misdeeds on 2nd January 2014.
