On Tuesday morning, the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS) issued a warning against an unofficial Whatsapp software update malware which infects Android smartphone users. Since September, the malware has infected 50 smartphone users who used mobile banking services.

Victims who were infected by the malware were prompted by a pop up window to update their Whatsapp after surfing virus infected websites. If they click on the link, users are prompted to provide their credit card details. Once this is done, the malware infects the smartphone and intercepts the one-time password or OTP when making fraudulent online transactions.

Some have lost thousands of dollars and these transactions originate from Eastern Europe. The malware or infection can be removed by resetting phones to its factory settings.
