This morning at approximately 3am an SCDF NSF recruit committed suicide at the National Service Training Institute Civil Defence Academy. A recruit from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) committed suicide at National Service Training Institute, Civil Defence Academy.
REC Edwin Ong Koon Chwee who was from the 139th intake, Charlie company jumped from the fourth story of his dormitory and was found motionless on the ground between 3 to 4 am. He has enlisted just 3 days earlier.
In his Facebook post prior to his suicide, Edwin explained his decision and blamed it on depression, confusion and his natural blurness.
He said: "I wanna thank my sister as she dote on me as I'm the youngest. Also ... My friends, Weiguang Ginchie and so on. The others too. for being my friend when I'm so lacking. idk who else to thanks. oh and my di and officer. Bunk mates tho I were so blur and ended up burdening them. Just overall I suck and I deserve to die"
The SCDF have since released a statement on Edwin's death.
Their message stated:
"The SCDF is saddened by the death of recruit (REC) Edwin Ong Koon Chwee early this morning and extends our deepest condolences to his family. REC Ong had enlisted three days ago on 16 February and was undergoing his National Service training at the National Service Training Institute (NSTI) at Jalan Bahar.
We are providing all necessary assistance to the family during this difficult time. The Director of the NSTI has spoken to the family and reiterated SCDF’s support to them during this time of bereavement. The family has requested for privacy during this time of bereavement.
The Police are currently investigating REC Ong’s death."
