In conjunction with Singapore's bid to be a global IT hub, the government and the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) are exploring technologies related to digital identification and authentication.

The proposed e-identity card (e-IC) would be used for online transactions across government agencies and commercial entities such as banks. Known as the Mobile Digital ID project, the e-IC initiative will be based on advanced encryption techniques - public key infrastructure (PKI) that are more secure than the current usage of one-time passwords (OTPs) and 2 factor authentication which are delivered via SMS or generated by a security token.

It is understood that the e-IC would sit in the SIM card of the handphone.

The e-IC however, does not replace the physical identity card.

In case the owner loses his handphone, he will have to report its loss as he would with a lost identity card.
