Diao Yen Mei, a Singapore Permanent Resident from China inherited more than $200,000 CPF money from her late Singaporean husband, Mr Sun Shui Yuan. This is despite the marriage being a sham marriage where Diao paid Sun $4000 and $400 a month before they wed in October 2012.
Diao was a dependent pass visa holder when she son was here as a student. In order to obtain her SPR, she paid Sun to marry her and help obtain her Permanent Residency.
After Sun passed away in August 2013, his sisters applied to the Courts to block the inheritance of his CPF money because he had originally nominated them in his will. Unfortunately, his sham marriage overruled his original will.
In 2012, Parliament criminialised sham marriages and those guilty would face a fine up to $10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 10 years. It is uncertain if Diao was prosecuted for her sham marriage in Singapore.
