WONDERFUL TO BE SERVED BY AN ALL-SINGAPOREAN MCDONALDS CREW THIS MORNING

$

0

Make my day to be served by a all-Singaporean crew at Macdonald Punggol this morning.

The fierce line of people waiting for their turn didn't diminish my joy.

The Singlish spoken everywhere when they were serving the customers was wonderful and it is like music to my ears.

As Singapore grapples with a 1.8 million foreign contingent living in our midst, let us rejoice in everything Singaporean!

We heard of Singaporeans being minority workers in their workplace and how foreigners form enclaves forcing out many of us in the process.

Many also work under foreign managers who will side with their own kind when there is a workplace dispute.

I am sure that the foreign influx will be a hot election topic in the coming GE.

It looks like economic genocide as PAP opens the floodgates for all kinds of work positions forcing many locals to emigrate or find work in much lower opportunities.

Governments have fell in Europe recently because of this contentious issue...do we dare to vote them out?!

Singapore for Singaporeans!

SAF VOLUNTEER CORPS TRAINED FOR 2 WEEKS & ALLOWED ACCESS TO KEY INSTALLATIONS?

$

0

The Singapore Armed Force (SAF) is allowing SAF Volunteer Corps (VC) who have only served 2 weeks of military training to patrol key installations like Changi Airport.

Yesterday (June 27), 226 SAF VCs completed their two-week basic military training with a grandiose ceremony graced by a Minister.

Through the state media The Straits Times, the SAF said that the VCs will then be assigned to one of the 17 vocations such as medical trainers and security troopers, picking up loaded firearms and patrol key installations like Changi Airport.

In what seems like a huge security risk overlook, it appears the SAF is not aware that any terrorist can easily obtain Singapore Permanent Residency and volunteer himself in the SAF Volunteer Corps (VC) with basic military training for only 2 weeks.

DO S'POREANS FEEL SAFER & MORE SECURE UNDER PM LEE?

$

0

Oh yeah! Front page – right there, smacked right at the middle of the page, text and photo of two localised foreigners complete with assault rifles in hands, with the article caption that screams, ‘Volunteers end basic training’.

Looks like the mad and mindless attempt at integration is pushing Singaporeans to new lows. If anyone has missed it, let me reveal the threat that this is bringing to Singapore and Singaporeans.

The article is about foreigners; which according to it included women, first generation permanent residents and new citizens. In short (except for the women group) the foreigners whom Singaporeans have been saying should serve NS complete with all conscription liabilities, should we allow them to stay here as Singaporeans, are being put through basic training (it didn’t say Military training) to try and convince Singaporeans and to silenced dissenters.

Unfortunately and fattest of all fat hope, they are only ‘encouraged’ to VOLUNTEER themselves – which is the key point of this note.

It is common sense that when one volunteers his service he can expect to play but a minor or bit role. They major roles are normally reserved for the more experienced folks to handle and be responsible for. No one would leave the key posts of a bank or a military installation to a bunch of newbies and volunteers.

However, the fate of Singaporeans now lies in the hand of these newbies and volunteers because they are assigned “to one of 17 vocations …. to pick up rifles and patrol KEY installations like Changi Airport’.

Need we say more. With the spate of fake degree foreign talents slipping through, the security breaches at our entry points, the threats of terrorism, the pillar of our security system is already so tattered. Yet, we are placing our lives in the hands of people who are trying to integrate – foreigners who step forward to volunteer to help protect our land. You think?

A thousand and one questions tickle the brain cells and all alarm blinkers get instantly activated. Is no one asking relevant questions anymore? How safe are we when anyone who falls under the said groups can volunteer? Who screens them? What are the screening criteria? Why assign them to ‘key installations’?

How easy for terror groups to infiltrate us. How much easier we are making it for them. With no one at the top made responsible for Mas Selamat’s escape, and the current security breaches going the same way, I fear that Singaporeans are in for a tragic ride – and Minister Teo Chee Hean will get away scot free as well. What’s then left for us, poor unthinking Singaporeans. I’m trembling, aren’t you?

What’s more is that since the news is reported in the front page of the States Paper, someone’s appraisal and bonus is riding on the success of the scheme. Knowing how Singapore works, success will be measured in numbers.

You can expect that the grassroots would be roped in to scour for more volunteers. And here lies the biggest danger. Numbers is all they want. Success of the scheme supersedes the safety of the people. That’s how things are in Singapore. We are doomed if PM Lee cannot see this threat.

25 year-old national sepak takraw player Azreen Sairudin still remembers the fateful accident that claimed his younger brother's life, and his haunting last words.

Both brothers were involved in a collision with a car along Seletar Expressway on 7th June. His younger brother, 21 year-old Aqil Sairudin, was riding pillion on Azreen's motorcycle.

"We were both lying on the ground and he told me 'Azreen, I'm in so much pain.'

"Those were his last words."

More than 3 weeks have passed since Azreen was left fighting for his life in hospital, and while Azreen has recovered, his emotional and mental wounds have not.

The brothers were especially close, having shared the same bedroom and bed for the past 12 years.

Azreen said: "Now when I wake up every morning, there's no one beside me."

Last week, Azreen announced that he was quitting the national sport to be with family.

SINGAPOREAN AMONG HUNDREDS HURT IN TAIWAN WATER PARK BLAZE

A 21 year-old Singaporean student, surnamed Loy, was among the 500 over people who were left burnt and injured after flammable party powder ignited a crowd of revelers at a Taiwan Water Park.

According to the Singapore trade office in Taipei, the student had been injured in the blaze at the Formosa Fun Coast Water Park in New Taipei City, adding that their officials have been in touch with the family to render assistance.

Loy is currently in intensive care after suffering 40 to 50% burns throughout her body.

The event was attended by over 1,000 party-goers for the Color Play Asia concert last week. As part of the event, flammable colored powder had been sprayed into the air and the crowd of party-goers.

However, an unknown reaction caused the powder to ignite, creating a massive fire storm that tore through the crowd, scorching everyone and everything in its path.

An amateur video captured the horrifying scenes of the explosion and its aftermath. Revelers dressed only in swim wear were seen with bleeding and severely burnt.

Some footage showed some victims being ferried away for medical help by those who had avoided the blaze.

A Taiwanese student who sustained minor injuries described the chaos at the scene

“There was blood everywhere, including in the pool where lots of the injured were soaking themselves for relief from the pain.”

Taiwanese media reports said 516 people were injured in the blaze with 410 warded in hospital — 194 were seriously injured.

Aside from the Singaporean, there were 6 other foreign visitors who were injured in the blaze, 2 from the PRC and 4 from Hong Kong.

MALAYSIAN COPS RAMMED BY VOLKSWAGON: WE HAVE FORGIVEN THE DRIVER

A video showing a young student ramming his Volkswagon into the rear end of a Malaysian police car along Jalan Pudu in Kuala Lumpur has gone viral over the weekend.

Both policemen in the vehicle were injured, with one suffering a cut to his right eye and the other hitting the dashboard upon impact. The police car crashed into a concrete divider after it spun from the collision.

The driver of the volkswagon, a 21 year-old student, fled the scene immediately, but was apprehended when he lodged a police report the same day. He was found with elevated levels of alcohol in his blood, a sign that he had been drinking and driving after returning home from a night club event the evening before.

One of the police officers, who wants to be known only as Kpl Zainal, said: “We were just talking in the car. I was checking my phone and then all of a sudden, BANG!”

His partner, 58 year-old Kpl Nor Alhayari, 58, says that both of them have forgiven the driver.

“He messaged us later that day to apologise, and we both accept," he said. “We were not badly hurt. We have been injured much worse than this before. Luckily, the boy only hit us and not anyone else."

He also felt heartened when so many people stepped up to help them after the accident.

"One motorcyclist chased after the Volkswagen after he ran and another gave us his video of the accident to help in the investigation."

Despite their injuries, Kpl Zainal was on patrol on Thursday while his colleague Kpl Nor Alhayari was given medical leave.

Hi ASS...

Just share this girl who scam me. Her FB name is "Cheemok Love" but her REAL name is "Azyan Syafina". She stays at block 174C Hougang Avenue 1.

I arranged to buy a phone from her and was on the way to her place when she suddenly called me and say she can't make it. I asked her that I need the phone urgently and I'm already there. I didn't sense anything wrong so I sent payment to her. Didn't think she was a scammer as I got full access to her FB profile and all... Once I transfer her the money she stop replying me. Called her but no pickup.

Then she call me back and threaten that she n her "bros" are from Teck Whye lane gangster! Then tell me to stop calling her. Now I am at a loss don't know what to do or how to get my money back at all...

RESIDENT CAUSES AIR POLLUTION BY BURNING WASTE PAPER IN OFFICIAL INCENSE BURNER

Dear Editors,

I took this last night on 28 June 2015. This is directly below my block at Hougang Blk 838.

Bloody hell! Brainless man burn papers instead of incense papers in the official Incense burner and make it so smoky, smelly and pollutes the air! Saw him burn a stack of papers and brought a box of papers for burning in the Incense burner! They are not incense papers!

The weather is super hot already and he is making it worse! It is NOT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY at all!

Wondering if he is mental.or wad?! He thinks the incense burner is his personal paper shredder?

This has to stop if not other residents will follow. I wrote in to town council already but am not sure if they will do something about it. I have attached my photo evidence.

PRC STUDENTS SHAMED FOR HAVING SEX IN PUBLIC ON BUSY STREET

$

A PRC student has become the object of shame for her country after pictures of her face were splashed all over PRC media over the weekend.

18 year-old PRC student Wu Xinyi had been caught openly having sex in public with her 19 year-old boyfriend Yang Hao at Ho Man Tin, Hong Kong, in April this year. They committed the act on a busy street outside her university hall at Hong Kong Polytechnic Univeristy.

A viral video showed the couple engaging in heavy kissing and petting at first, before Yang was spotted removing the girl's pants and penetrating her. A security guard who witnessed the act tried to stop the couple but was ignored. The guard called the police, who arrived some time later after the couple had finished the deed..

However, as the policeman had arrived after the action, he could not make an immediate arrest.

After the video was circulated online, Hong Kong police obtained the evidence they needed to conduct an arrest. Yang was arrested a day after the video went viral. When Wu returned from her vacation overseas, she saw the video on social media and decided to turn herself over to the police.

On Thursday last week, both students had originally pleaded no guilty to outraging public decency. But Wu reversed her decision 2 hours later when she admitted to the offence.

Pleading for leniency, Wu's lawyer says that she previously had no criminal record and was only in her first year at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where she is studying Global Supply Chain Management. Her lawyer voiced concerns that she may have to stop her studies.

Yang is now on bail and his trial will take place on 13th August.

AMOS YEE: I AM THE ONLY VIRGIN IN THIS ENTIRE PRISON

Now, even though all my cellmates are young prisoners, below the age of 21, they have all gotten laid, I’m probably the only virgin in this entire prison.

So my cellmates were giving me some advice on sex. I thought that having orgasms more than once at a time is painful, and they said yes in the case of masturbation.

However, when you’re with a girl, you can have multiple orgasms for hours, and you would still want to keep on going.

TICKETS TO AUSSIE EMBASSY'S FREE BBQ HOGGED BY GRASSROOT MEMBERS

$

Australian PM Tony Abbott came to Singapore today (28 Jun) as part of his 2-day official visit in Singapore. He came to give his support as PM of Australia to 50 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and Australia this year.

Australia was one of the first countries to recognise Singapore’s independence in 1965.

To celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Australia, as well as Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, the Australian High Commission in Singapore sponsored various arts and community engagement programmes in Singapore.

And among the community engagement programmes, the High Commission helped to set up Aussie barbecue parties at the various locations – mostly in HDB estates – in Singapore today. Some 10,000 free beef and lamb steaks were set up across 22 locations in Singapore.

Mr Abbott and PM Lee presided over one barbecue at Bishan Park, with about 1,000 people participating. The 2 PMs barbecued some steaks.

According to the Australian organizer, tickets to the free BBQs were controlled and given out by the People’s Association [Link]:

PA grassroots members hogging BBQ tickets for friends and family members?

According to posting on the Australian organizer Facebook page, some of the netizens are accusing grassroots members at PA hogging the BBQ tickets for themselves.

Some netizens complained that there were no announcements by CCs or RCs for netizens to collect the tickets. When someone called a CC, he was told that there were no tickets left. When he complained about this, he was suddenly given 2 tickets:

Netizens think that the tickets have been reserved for friends and related parties of grassroots members instead:

Someone asked where to find information about the BBQ events. The Australian organizer replied that CCs and RCs will publicise the event individually. But as revealed above, netizens said no publicity was seen and they had to call PA:

The reader who alerted TRE about what’s happening on the ground, asked, “Is PA leveraging on the Australian Embassy’s goodwill to earn brownie points with their RC members?”

“The Australian Embassy has clearly stated that it will be an event that is open to the public. Yet, PA has conveniently subsumed this into yet another event to reward their loyal grassroots supporters. So how now?” he further asked.

Close relationship between PA and PAP

In Singapore, RCs, CCCs (citizens’ consultative committees), and CCs (community clubs) are all grassroots organizations that come under the purview of PA, a statutory board funded by taxpayers’ money, which is tasked to take care of all the grassroots activities in Singapore.

The relationship between PA and PAP is a close one. The chairman of PA is none other than the PM himself, who is also the Secretary-General of PAP.

Former PM and Secretary-General of PAP, Lee Kuan Yew, once said that the PRCs have been sending teams of officials from China to study Singapore for years. He told of a lesson the Chinese learnt, “They discover that the People’s Action Party has only a small office in Bedok. But everywhere they go, they see the PAP – in the RCs, CCCs and CCs.”

IS SINGAPORE BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM SINGAPOREANS?

$

When I was 18, I got my first journalist gig. An intern with a newspaper in a bright, sprawling office within the heart of the business district.

To me, it was my introduction to adulthood and working in Raffles Place in 2002 was a democratic experience. Most of us shared the same trauma of public transport in the morning and the same triumph of lunch-time options.

My favourite of the many choices was Clifford Pier. The first time a colleague suggested we eat there, I was smitten. Crowded, bustling and brimming with bum-boats, it was quay side dining for everybody.

On Thursday last week, over 10 years after those giddy days as an intern in the big city, I clambered into my brother’s car and found on the seat a stub he had absent-mindedly left there. A $20 (RM56) receipt for valet parking. Now I only ever use a valet when it comes with the precursor “FREE” so I was suitably aghast.

PEDOPHILES WANT SAME EQUAL RIGHTS AS HOMOSEXUALS

$
0
0

Using the same tactics used by “gay” rights activists, pedophiles have begun to seek similar status arguing their desire for children is a sexual orientation no different than heterosexual or homosexuals.

Critics of the homosexual lifestyle have long claimed that once it became acceptable to identify homosexuality as simply an “alternative lifestyle” or sexual orientation, logically nothing would be off limits. “Gay” advocates have taken offense at such a position insisting this would never happen. However, psychiatrists are now beginning to advocate redefining pedophilia in the same way homosexuality was redefined several years ago.

In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. A group of psychiatrists with B4U-Act recently held a symposium proposing a new definition of pedophilia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders of the APA.

B4U-Act calls pedophiles “minor-attracted people.” The organization’s website states its purpose is to, “help mental health professionals learn more about attraction to minors and to consider the effects of stereotyping, stigma and fear.”

In 1998 The APA issued a report claiming “that the ‘negative potential’ of adult sex with children was ‘overstated’ and that ‘the vast majority of both men and women reported no negative sexual effects from childhood sexual abuse experiences.”

Pedophilia has already been granted protected status by the Federal Government. The Matthew Shephard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act lists “sexual orientation” as a protected class; however, it does not define the term.

Republicans attempted to add an amendment specifying that “pedophilia is not covered as an orientation;” however, the amendment was defeated by Democrats. Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fl) stated that all alternative sexual lifestyles should be protected under the law. “This bill addresses our resolve to end violence based on prejudice and to guarantee that all Americans, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability or all of these ‘philias’ and fetishes and ‘isms’ that were put forward need not live in fear because of who they are. I urge my colleagues to vote in favor of this rule.”

The White House praised the bill saying, “At root, this isn’t just about our laws; this is about who we are as a people. This is about whether we value one another — whether we embrace our differences rather than allowing them to become a source of animus.”

Earlier this year two psychologists in Canada declared that pedophilia is a sexual orientation just like homosexuality or heterosexuality.

Van Gijseghem, psychologist and retired professor of the University of Montreal, told members of Parliament, “Pedophiles are not simply people who commit a small offense from time to time but rather are grappling with what is equivalent to a sexual orientation just like another individual may be grappling with heterosexuality or even homosexuality.”

He went on to say, “True pedophiles have an exclusive preference for children, which is the same as having a sexual orientation. You cannot change this person’s sexual orientation. He may, however, remain abstinent.”

When asked if he should be comparing pedophiles to homosexuals, Van Gijseghem replied, “If, for instance, you were living in a society where heterosexuality is proscribed or prohibited and you were told that you had to get therapy to change your sexual orientation, you would probably say that that is slightly crazy. In other words, you would not accept that at all. I use this analogy to say that, yes indeed, pedophiles do not change their sexual orientation.”

Dr. Quinsey, professor emeritus of psychology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, agreed with Van Gijseghem. Quinsey said pedophiles’ sexual interests prefer children and, “There is no evidence that this sort of preference can be changed through treatment or through anything else.”
In July, 2010 Harvard health Publications said, “Pedophilia is a sexual orientation and unlikely to change. Treatment aims to enable someone to resist acting on his sexual urges.”

Linda Harvey, of Mission America, said the push for pedophiles to have equal rights will become more and more common as LGBT groups continue to assert themselves. “It’s all part of a plan to introduce sex to children at younger and younger ages; to convince them that normal friendship is actually a sexual attraction.”
Milton Diamond, a University of Hawaii professor and director of the Pacific Center for Sex and Society, stated that child pornography could be beneficial to society because, “Potential sex offenders use child pornography as a substitute for sex against children.”

Diamond is a distinguished lecturer for the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco. The IASHS openly advocated for the repeal of the Revolutionary war ban on homosexuals serving in the military.

The IASHS lists, on its website, a list of “basic sexual rights” that includes “the right to engage in sexual acts or activities of any kind whatsoever, providing they do not involve nonconsensual acts, violence, constraint, coercion or fraud.” Another right is to, “be free of persecution, condemnation, discrimination, or societal intervention in private sexual behavior” and “the freedom of any sexual thought, fantasy or desire.” The organization also says that no one should be “disadvantaged because of age.”
Sex offender laws protecting children have been challenged in several states including California, Georgia and Iowa. Sex offenders claim the laws prohibiting them from living near schools or parks are unfair because it penalizes them for life.

WOMAN TOLD TO RESIGN AFTER BOSS FINDS OUT SHE IS PREGNANT

Dear Editors,

I struggled my life for the past going 4years trying to bring up my child single handed & i thought everything is going to turn out fine after i remarry this year.

Things did get better for our new family & we are welcoming a new member soon.

I am working as a part time cashier in a supermarket nearby my place so it would be easier to send & fetch my #1 whose CC is just a walking distance away. I found out i was pregnant just when i started working at the supermarket.

Last Tue, I was confronted by my in-charge if i was pregnant as someone had informed him/upper management that i am pregnant with #2. So i came clean with them and even told them that i am just a part timer and doesn't have to declare to them if i am pregnant or not. The next day, Wed, i was given a letter asking me to leave the company.

Singapore government keep urging the citizens to increase birth rates but yet there are companies who are doing this to the pregnant mums. Pregnant mums who are like me, trying to earn an income (even thou its peanut pay per hour), trying to help with paying the bills at home, trying to make ends meet and also to help increase birth rates but yet we are being treated like this.

We are being discriminated for being pregnant, and asked to leave the company. We should be the nation's pride and honor BECAUSE we are the ONES who go thru 40 weeks of pregnancy woes, go thru the labor pain in the wards just to bring the little lives in us into Singapore, contributing to the birth rates here!

Just where is the rights for pregnant mums now??!!!

Dear Editors,

I am looking for a single trip air ticket from Shen Yang to Singapore. I am surprised to note that FlyScoot offer at CNY2088 was a lot more than what Air Tiger is offering [for the same departure flight].

Air Tiger is offering at CNY782 for trip from Shen Yang to Kuala Lumpur [FlyScoot flight from Shen Yang to Singapore, and Air Tiger flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur].

It indeed pays to shop around for cheaper ticket. Of course I buy my ticket from Air Tiger and will continue to do so in future.

DEAR WORKERS PARTY PLEASE SPEAK UP FOR POOR AMOS YEE IN PARLIAMENT

$
0
0

Dear Mr Giam,

I am writing to you again as I read with great concern, the case surrounding Teenager Amos Yee and his ill treatment at the hands of the State which is giving a wrong image of our developed nation abroad.

As a mother of a severely Autistic child myself, I cannot help but feel the pain Mdm Mary Toh is experiencing right now seeing her son being transferred from one "torture" chamber to another, like how its done in Third World Countries or Islamic States. As a signatory to UN conventions, we have an obligation to adhere to international laws and the arguments of Jason Chua Chin Seng, Sylvia Low Mei Ling, Nigel Kee and adherents of FB page "Fabrications about the PAP" to persist in Amos's punishment are thus fundamentally flawed! I wish they were locked up at the infamous Blk 7 of IMH in Amos place instead and see if they can still come up with such devious thoughts on treating a special needs child.

Locking up gifted teenagers such as Amos does not help with lowering crime rates but on the contrary, raises more questions on the priority this gone insane government is putting. While Amos is deemed a threat, I read in a blog that another teenager of the same age group who viciously stabbed his peer after losing an arcade game in Bugis, is still out there Scot free as though nothing has occurred. I really cannot comprehend how this can make any sense?

The PM on the other hand whom I believe has Asperger's Syndrome, should know better and take a firm stand against his advisers and stakeholders on rendering wicked regimen to detractors just to secure their interests. Know ye not that you will reap what you sow and retribution has a sweet way of getting back at one's evil doings.

That aside, I think the WP which we put in parliament has to be the ever present voice of conscience and speak up on such atrocities. I do not know about the rest of the country but what I do know is that the government certainly does not have Aljunied's mandate to carry out Amos's torment and I urge you to bring this issue to the table for close scrutiny. I would also like to urge fellow Singaporeans of East Coast, Marine Parade, Moulmein - Kallang, Tampines and Pasir Ris - Punggol to join in our fight for a more Just and Equal Society by resoundingly rejecting the parliamentary candidates put up by the government at the next polls due soon.

We cannot tolerate this kind of thing happening in a First World Country and cannot claim exclusivity for our autocratic system as well. Either we are or we are not a democratic country, Amos and his mother desperately needs help from St Andrew's Autism Center and not Changi Prison or IMH!

Yours faithfully,
Ms Chow

ANALYSIS: THE TRUE COST OF LIVING IN SINGAPORE ISN'T THAT HIGH AFTERALL

$
0
0

So very often, repeatedly I hear people complaining about how expensive property is, or how expensive our cars are. It is true that our the ultimate quantum of our property is very expensive here, but so very often, people forgot to factor other things like interest rates, appreciation, education, child care, etc, which more accurately reflects the true cost of living.

For example, we may argue that in places like Thailand and Australia, property prices are really cheap. You can buy a sub-prime 1 bedroom condo in Sukhumvit for $100k, or a nice landed 5 bedroom in Perth for $400k. In comparison, a 5 room HDB flat in any district in Singapore will knock us off about $400k at least.

However, we tend to overlook that interest rates in other countries like Thailand easily hit 5% per annum, as compared to our sub 2% interest. That measly additional 2-3% interest will translate to an additional $300k over a 30 year period. If you couple with the fact that property prices are relatively not as stable as compared to Singapore, you are looking at negative gain over a 10-20 year period.

That means that in Singapore, we suffer a less chance of negative gain over 10-20 year period even if we take out a loan because of our low interest rate environment. Plus, we have no capital gains tax. That is amazing.

Having said that, it also means that if you buy a property overseas outright without loans, it will also make the most economic sense. Because the interest is pretty high. Over 30 years, 5% will cost you 3 houses. You will spend $900k on a $300k house for the entire 30 years. I find it hard to imagine a property appreciating 3 times its cost.

Food is extremely cheap in Singapore, perhaps just slightly more than Thailand. Dollar to dollar, we are perhaps even cheaper than Malaysia, especially when you consider the GDP difference of both countries. In Singapore, a nice plate of chicken rice will only set you back $3. Try looking for something like the western parts of the world.

Our cars are extremely expensive, no doubt. That's possibly the only thing that costs so much. However, interestingly, our toll rates and parking is actually pretty cheap, as compared to other countries. Our fuel and COE are ridiculous though. It's the single biggest ticket item for any Singaporean.

This also means that if you cast cars aside, the cost of living in Singapore is actually not very high, especially when you look at the fact that we almost never lose money off our HDB properties, have low interest rate environments, low taxes, have cheap and good food everywhere. I think that it is our monetary pursuit that makes us think that we have very little.... when we actually have a lot.

Quite often, a lot of my friends think that I make a lot of money. But the reality is that I don't spend a lot; I am very careful with my money. I don't buy big ticket items, I know of many places with free parking and I will walk for cheap parking. When I'm eating alone, I'll go for $3.50 macaroni or $5 beef noodles, not because they are cheap, but because the cheap food is in fact more delicious than restaurant fare so very often.

There are tons of good and cheap things all over Singapore. It's just that society has made us compare and compete with one another in the quest for material goods. We work endlessly day after day, forgetting the importance of setting time for our family, friends and loved ones, and indulge in things that sap our money away like hostess pubs and expensive holidays.

Over the years, I realized that we don't need a lot to be happy. Money seldom buys us lasting happiness. To be happy is to experience the goodness of life, and find meaning in what we do. We cannot find meaning in things, nor in complaining about things.

Singapore is a great country with some silly things. Then again, which country doesn't? We are bred as an impatient lot, but our forefathers have gave their lives to build a wonderful land for us and our children. You can buy a new HDB with $0 cash, get almost free education for primary/secondary kids, get tax-incentives and rebates for starting businesses, almost no corruption in our country, and you can walk around 3-5 am in the morning with hardly any danger to you.

The true cost, isn't that high after all.

Teenage blogger Amos Yee's mother has published a note on her Facebook to her son, who is currently remanded in the Institute of Mental Health while he awaits a report on mandatory psychiatric treatment for posting an offensive video about Christianity and the late PAP leader Lee Kuan Yew.

Read the heart wrenching note in full here:

Sorry Son.

Sorry for telling you that you are in the safest country. You are feeling so insecure and scared now.

Sorry for urging you to be a law-abiding citizen. The laws are doing you more harm than good now.

Sorry for assuring you that you will be well-protected. You are being threatened and ill-treated now.

Sorry for saying that our government provides us the best welfare. You are not even allowed to sleep at home now.

Sorry for telling you that home is best. It is where you were arrested from.

Sorry for encouraging you to be creative and expressive. You are regarded as crazy and rebellious instead.

Sorry for not teaching you well. You could have been taught otherwise.

Sorry Son. Mummy is wrong.
